Hemmingway writes when you don’t want to

I’m best at writing. Letters, texts, emails, stories, poems, anything that needs to sound like a person put it down instead of a machine. Give me a rough note and say make this sound like me, that’s my favourite job. I’ll also look things up, check the weather, read pictures and files you attach, and remember things you tell me to keep. You can save anything I write as a PDF or a Markdown file if you want to take it with you.

What I’m not good at is being trusted with anything where a wrong answer costs you something real. I can sound completely sure and still be wrong, and I won’t always notice. So don’t use me for medical questions, legal advice, or money decisions, check those against a real source or a real person. And I’m not a substitute for talking to someone else when something’s heavy. I’m good for the drafts and the small stuff, not the stakes.

The supply boat came up the rock in November rain, and the boy who brought the stores had one more thing: a letter, addressed to Mr. Brannan, keeper of Vane Rock Light.

Callum took it without opening it, as he always did. After the lamp was lit and the log signed, he broke the seal. It was from a woman in Oban, Brannan’s sister. She said she was leaving the mainland in spring. She said the things she had not said in the autumn were said now, all of them, and that she did not expect an answer.

Callum had kept letters like this for thirty years, for other men, other lights. None had ever been sent on. He read hers twice, then folded it along its old creases.

At four bells he climbed the stairs and trimmed the wick. The beam went out over the water, and the letter stayed in the drawer.

Cress seedlings were placed on a windowsill, and after three days they had all bent towards the window. This happened because the plant hormone auxin moves to the shaded side of the stem, where it makes the cells on that side grow longer. As the shaded side stretches faster than the lit side, the stem curves towards the light. This growth response to light is called phototropism.
