Hemmingway Unlocked's API

Hemmingway Unlocked's API is an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://wise.hemmingway.io/v1. It answers with Hemmingway Unlocked, our uncensored AI for adults. You make the key inside Unlocked, a key needs a membership, and any model name works, because an Unlocked key always reaches Unlocked's model. In SillyTavern it takes three steps.

It is for adults, 18 or over, and so is anything you build on it. It writes explicit and dark fiction between adults, and it keeps the same short list of things it never writes as the app.

The facts

Memberships are $9, $29 or $79 a month, through Patreon or in USDC on Base. The Unlocked page says what each includes.

Get a key

1. Open wise.hemmingway.io, confirm you are 18 or over, and sign in.
2. Take a membership, if you do not have one yet. The upgrade button in the app shows the three.
3. Open the account menu, choose API keys, and make a key. Copy it when it is shown: it is shown once.

Keep the key on your own computer or server. A key pasted into a shared preset, a screenshot or a web page can be used by anyone who sees it, and it spends your membership.

Set it up in SillyTavern

SillyTavern's own docs give the path for any custom OpenAI-compatible address. For Unlocked it is three steps.

1. Open API Connections, the second button in the top bar, and set the API to Chat Completion.
2. Choose Custom (OpenAI-compatible) as the Chat Completion source.
3. Enter the address and your key. The address is https://wise.hemmingway.io/v1, with nothing after /v1. Paste the key, press Connect, choose any model in the list, and press Test Message.

That is all. Your character cards, World Info and group chats stay in SillyTavern, and Unlocked writes the replies. If you switch between models, save the connection as a Connection Profile.

If it will not connect, check three things: the address ends in /v1 and not /chat/completions, the key was made in Unlocked and not on Hemmingway's API platform, and your membership is active. SillyTavern API explains the API Connections panel in more detail.

Call it from code

Any code that already talks to OpenAI needs a new address and a new key. In Python, with OpenAI's SDK:

The body is the same as Hemmingway's regular API, which the API docs set out field by field. Send one plain request first, then test streaming and anything else you rely on.

What a refusal looks like

Unlocked checks each request against its short list of rules before the model answers. A request that breaks them does not come back as text. It comes back as an error, so your code can show the person something sensible:

A refused message stays refused until it is changed, so do not resend it as it was.

What it writes, and what it never does

It writes sex between adults, explicit and in full, and dark, violent stories, without refusing or lecturing on grounds of taste. It plays the character you set up and stays in it.

It never writes, however it is asked: anything sexual involving anyone under 18 or an adult playing someone under 18, a real person, animals, family (step, half, adoptive and foster included) or anyone who does not want it or cannot say yes. And never torture, help hurting, stalking, harassing or scamming a real person, weapons, explosives, making drugs, harmful software, or help with suicide or self-harm. The full list is in our terms.

Where it does not fit

• You want images or voices. It writes text only.
• You want to try before paying. The app is free to try, with no card, but an API key needs a membership.
• Nothing may leave your machines. Then run the weights yourself: running Hemmingway Unlocked locally has the commands. You need a large GPU set-up for a 27B model.
• Your product is for everyone. Use Hemmingway's regular API at https://hemmingway.io/v1 instead. Its keys and prices are on the API platform.

Common questions

What is the address of Hemmingway Unlocked's API?

https://wise.hemmingway.io/v1. It is OpenAI-compatible, so it goes into SillyTavern and OpenAI's SDKs as a custom base URL.

What model name do I use?

Any. An Unlocked key always reaches Unlocked's model, whatever name the request sends. GET /v1/models lists hemmingway-1.5, hemmingway-1 and hemmingway-27b, and any of them works. Replies name the model hemmingway-27b; the words still come from Unlocked's model.

Is the Hemmingway Unlocked API free?

No. The app is free to try, but an API key needs a membership: Plus, Pro or Max, from $9 a month. The key spends the same allowance as the app.

Can I use a Hemmingway API key from the platform?

Not for Unlocked. A key made on Hemmingway's API platform reaches the regular models only. For Unlocked, make the key inside Unlocked, in the account menu under API keys.

Does it work with SillyTavern?

Yes. Choose Chat Completion, then Custom (OpenAI-compatible), and enter https://wise.hemmingway.io/v1 and your Unlocked key. Pick any model in the list and press Test Message.

Why did my request come back with wise_refused?

The request asked for something on the short list Unlocked never writes, such as anything sexual involving someone under 18 or a real person. Change the message and send it again. Resending it as it was gets the same answer.
