The Commons Lab is the small team that makes Hemmingway. We train our own model, Hemmingway-1, for one job: writing that sounds like a person wrote it.
What we are trying to do
The big assistants are built to be right about everything. Hemmingway-1 is built to sound human: the message to a friend, the reply you keep putting off, the letter, the story. Writing you can send as your own.
The rules we keep
- Open weights. Hemmingway-1 is on Hugging Face, so anyone can run it, test it and check our numbers. It is free for non-commercial use under CC BY-NC 4.0, and commercial use is by agreement.
- Your writing stays yours. We never train on your chats, your memory or the People you keep, and we never sell them.
- It asks first. Hemmingway can read your mail and chats and draft replies the way you would, and it asks before anything goes out in your name.
- Small on purpose. Hemmingway-1 has 27 billion parameters, small next to the big models, and small enough to run on your own computer.
- We say what it is bad at. It can be wrong and sound sure. It is not for medical, legal or money decisions.
Who we are
The Commons Lab is our project and brand name, not a separate company. Hemmingway is operated by Luka Simonovic, trading as Altworld.io, in Bülach, Switzerland. The about page has the rest, and the contact page is how to reach us.
