An introduction email does one of two jobs: it tells someone who you are, or it puts two people you know in touch. Say who is being introduced to whom and what they should know, and Hemmingway writes it, with a subject line that says it is an introduction.
It knows only what you tell it about the people involved. It will not add a job title, a shared history or a compliment you did not give, which matters when the email is about someone else.
What makes it work
- Say who you are to them, not only your title. "Your new contact", "Petra's replacement", "a friend of Corbin's". That is what tells them why the email is in their inbox.
- One sentence of background. How long you have done the work, or the one thing you have in common. The rest can wait for the conversation.
- Give them something to do. A call, a question, a time you will drop by, or "no need to reply". An introduction with no next step just sits there.
An example
Asked for an email introducing yourself to Rafael, a client whose account you are taking over from Petra, saying that you have been on the support team for four years, that Petra has briefed you on the warehouse move in March, and that you will be his contact from 1 December, and asking for a twenty-minute call next week so he can tell you what matters most, an email along these lines is what to expect:
Subject: Introduction: your new contact from 1 December
Hi Rafael,
I'm taking over your account from Petra, and from 1 December I'll be your contact here. I've been on the support team for four years.
Petra has briefed me on the warehouse move in March.
Could we have a twenty-minute call next week? I'd like to hear what matters most to you.

Introducing two people
Put both in the first box, for example "Hollis, a freelance translator, to Wen, who runs a small publisher". In the second, give a line on each and the reason they should talk. Ask both of them before you send it: an introduction nobody agreed to is a chore for the person who receives it. The email is addressed to both and leaves them to arrange the rest.
