How to auto-reply on WhatsApp with AI

WhatsApp's own auto-replies are for businesses. Hemmingway drafts each WhatsApp reply the way you write to that person, and sends on its own only if you let it.

To auto-reply on WhatsApp with AI, you need an app that can read your WhatsApp chats and write back for you. Hemmingway does this in its Mac and Android apps. It drafts each reply the way you write to that person, and you send it. If you want, Autopilot sends the easy ones on its own, by rules you set. Autopilot is off until you turn it on.

What WhatsApp itself offers

WhatsApp's own auto-reply tools are for businesses. The WhatsApp Business app can greet people when they start a conversation and answer messages while you are away, and Meta offers an AI agent that answers customers' questions in the chat. Both are built for a business talking to its customers.

For your own chats with friends, family and the people you work with, you need something else: replies that sound like you, not like a shop.

How Hemmingway answers WhatsApp

  • It links like WhatsApp Web. On the Mac you scan a code in WhatsApp, under Linked devices. On Android it links by phone number instead: you type a code WhatsApp shows you under Linked devices.
  • It drafts each reply. Your WhatsApp chats come into Hemmingway's Inbox, with your mail and other chats. Open one and Hemmingway drafts the reply. You read it, change it if you like, and send it.
  • It writes to each person the way you do. In People you say who someone is: your sister, your landlord, a client. Hemmingway writes to them the way you would, in the language you use with them. They never see any of it.
  • Short means short. A WhatsApp message comes back the length of a WhatsApp message, not a paragraph about one.

On Android, Hemmingway also drafts replies to texts and to the chat apps that show up in your notifications. On the Mac it covers iMessage, Slack and Teams as well as WhatsApp. The Windows app has the same Inbox for your mail and chats.

Autopilot: the part that sends on its own

Autopilot is what makes it an auto-reply. It is off until you turn it on, and it is in the Mac and Android apps on the paid plans.

With it on, it answers the easy messages that match your rules: people you know who just need an answer, like confirming a time or saying thanks. Everything else waits for you as a draft. A message from someone who is not in your contacts is kept as a draft rather than answered.

Every reply Autopilot sends is listed in Activity with the reason it sent it, so you can see exactly what went out in your name. You can turn Autopilot off, or remove an account, under Settings, Connected accounts.

A reply that sounds like you

Say your friend writes: "Still on for Saturday? Can you bring the speaker?" A set away message cannot answer that. A reply in your own voice might read:

Yes! 7 still good? I'll bring it, just remind me Friday

The words come from how you write to that friend, which you set in People, and from what Hemmingway keeps in Memory. You can read, change and delete every line of Memory.

What it will not do

It will not hold long conversations pretending to be you, and it is not built to flirt or argue for you. It is for the everyday replies you would write yourself if you had a minute.

Privacy

We never train our models on your chats, your Memory or the People you keep, and we never sell them. Autopilot stores your messages on the Mac or phone that runs it; to write a reply, the message goes to our servers through the Hemmingway API. The privacy page lists what is kept and where.

Common questions

Can I auto-reply to WhatsApp messages with AI?

Yes. Hemmingway's Mac and Android apps link to WhatsApp like WhatsApp Web, draft a reply to each message in the way you write to that person, and, if you turn on Autopilot, send the easy ones by your rules. Autopilot is off until you turn it on.

Will people know the reply came from AI?

The replies are written the way you write to that person, at the length of a normal message, so they read like yours. Hemmingway-1.5, the model behind the app, passes AI detectors 90% of the time. You still decide what goes out: drafts wait for you, and Autopilot only sends what fits your rules.

Is the WhatsApp auto-reply free?

The Hemmingway app is free to try. Autopilot, which sends on its own, is on the paid plans: Plus, Pro and Max. The pricing page has the details.
