There is no single best AI story generator, because "generate a story" covers three different jobs. For a short story from your own idea, a simple generator is enough: ours is the Hemmingway story generator. For a novel or long chapters, use a large story model, where Claude did best in our tests, or a tool built for novelists such as Sudowrite. For a story you play through turn by turn, use a text adventure such as AI Dungeon.
The mistake is to pick by name and then use the tool for the wrong job. A text adventure will not hand you a finished story. A one-box generator will not hold a novel together. So start with the kind of story.

Short stories from your own idea
This is the plain meaning of a story generator. You have an idea, you want a story of a few hundred words, and you do not want to learn a tool.
The story generator on this site asks who the story is about and what they want, what goes wrong, and, if you like, where it is set and how long it should be. It writes one story and gives you only the story. It fills in small things a story needs, such as a line of dialogue, and leaves the character, the trouble and the setting as you gave them. There are versions for particular kinds too, such as a bedtime story generator and a horror story generator.
It runs on our own model, Hemmingway-1. On StoryBench, our own blind story test, Hemmingway-1 scored 1197, level with Kimi K3 and ahead of Qwen3.8 Max and DeepSeek V4 Pro. That is good for a 27B model, and it is not first. Its strength is in short pieces that read as if a person wrote them: in our Human-Likeness test it came first of the models we tested. It also keeps to the length you ask for.
Novels and long chapters
For long fiction, bigger models write better stories. On StoryBench, Claude's Fable 5.1 scored 1350, the highest on our board. ChatGPT's GPT-6 Astra scored 1312, Fable 5 Max 1277 and GLM-5.3 1254. Hemmingway-1 is behind all four, and when we broke the results down it lost on long story turns.
A general assistant gives you good prose one reply at a time. A novel also needs somewhere to keep the characters, the plot and what has already happened. That is the gap tools for novelists try to fill. Sudowrite describes itself as built with novelists in mind, and its site lists a story bible along with tools to write, describe, expand, rewrite and brainstorm. Interactive stories
Some people do not want a finished story at all. They want to be in one.
AI Dungeon calls itself a text adventure game. You start a fantasy quest, a survival story or a scenario of your own, and the AI answers each thing you do. Its site says it is free to play. NovelAI offers a story generator next to its image tools. Its site says the generator is meant to write with you, not in your place, in a space built for your own way of working.
We have not tested either, so we cannot tell you how well they write. What we can say is that they are a different kind of product from a generator. You get an evening's play, not a page to keep. For play with one character in a long conversation, see the best AI for roleplay.
What makes a generated story good
Whichever tool you use, the same things decide whether the story is worth reading.
- A character who wants something. "A story about a dragon" gives the AI nothing to work with. "A dragon who is afraid of fire" does.
- Something that goes wrong. No trouble, no story.
- A length and a tone. Ask for them. A generator with no limit tends to write too much.
- An ending that is earned. AI stories like to finish with a lesson. Ask for no moral, or cut the last paragraph.

Where Hemmingway fits, and where it does not
Hemmingway fits the short end: a story for a child, a piece for a writing group, a scene you want to see played out, a story to go in a card. The generator is free to try. There is a free trial with no card needed, and the form opens it with your answers filled in.
It does not fit the long end. For a novel, pick a larger model or a novelist's tool. It is not a text adventure. And it is English-first.

- Decide what you want to end up with: one finished short story, a book, or an evening's play.
- For one short story, use a generator with a form and give it a character, a want and a problem.
- For a book, pick a large model for the prose. If keeping track becomes the hard part, look at a novelist's tool.
- For play, pick a text adventure.
- Run the same idea through two tools before you settle. With stories, taste decides more than any score.
