QuillBot alternatives

QuillBot alternatives sorted by job: other paraphrasers, grammar checkers, and AI tools that write the text for you. What each is for and how to choose.

By the Hemmingway team ·

QuillBot is a set of writing tools built around text you already have. Its own site lists a paraphraser, a grammar checker, a summariser, a translator and a citation generator, along with an AI detector, an AI humanizer and a plagiarism checker. People who look for an alternative usually want one of those jobs done somewhere else, so the first question is which job.

We make one of the tools on this page, Hemmingway, so read our part with that in mind. We have not tested QuillBot, Wordtune, Grammarly, LanguageTool or DeepL Write, so nothing here ranks them. What each one does is taken from its own website.

Who looks for a QuillBot alternative

  • You reword sentences and paragraphs. You want another paraphraser, or one that works inside the apps you write in.
  • You mostly use the grammar checker. You want a checker that follows you into your browser, your documents and your mail.
  • You write in more than one language. You want a tool that checks or rewrites in the language you are writing in.
  • You want a rewrite that sounds like you. Keeping the meaning is one job. Sounding like the person who wrote it is another.
  • You have no draft yet. A paraphraser needs text to work on. You want a tool that writes.
  • You are a student. Citations and plagiarism checks are their own job, and most tools below do not do them.

Three kinds of alternative

Rewriters take your sentence and give you other ways to say it. Checkers leave your words mostly alone and mark what is wrong. Writers start from what you want to say and produce the text.

QuillBot is mainly the first, with some of the second. Most alternatives lean one way.

Wordtune

Wordtune's site describes an AI writing assistant that paraphrases and rewrites, switches between formal and casual, shortens or expands text, and corrects grammar. It also summarises, and it works through browser extensions inside tools such as Google Docs, Gmail and Word. If the part of QuillBot you use most is "say this sentence another way", Wordtune is the closest in kind. Wordtune alternatives covers it on its own page.

Grammarly

Grammarly's site describes checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation and tone, with sentence and paragraph rewriting and a paraphrasing tool alongside. It runs as browser extensions, desktop and mobile apps, and inside Word and Google Docs. Pick it if checking matters more to you than rewording, and you want it wherever you type. Grammarly alternatives goes through that side.

LanguageTool

LanguageTool is a grammar, spelling and style checker that covers many languages and several varieties of English. Its site also lists a paraphrasing tool that rephrases a sentence to be more formal, simpler or shorter. It has browser add-ons and plugs into office and mail programs. It suits anyone who writes in two or three languages in the same week.

DeepL Write

DeepL Write comes from the company behind the DeepL translator. Its site says it corrects spelling, grammar and punctuation and offers alternative words and sentences, with settings for style and tone, in a range of languages. It is a sensible pick if you write in a second language and want your sentences to sound natural as well as correct.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general assistant, and it will paraphrase, shorten or write if you paste text in and say what you want. It is not built around rewording the way QuillBot is, so you do more of the steering. In our own tests of everyday messages, its model GPT-6 Astra wrote short replies with little commentary around them, and scored lower than Hemmingway-1 on sounding like a person.

Hemmingway

Hemmingway is ours. It is mainly a writer: you say who a message is for and what you want said, and it writes it, one version with nothing around it to cut. It also rewrites. The paraphrasing tool takes text you paste in and says it another way, keeping the meaning.

In our own blind test, Human-Likeness, a judge was asked which of two texts a person wrote, and Hemmingway-1 came first of the models we tested. That is our benchmark, and QuillBot was not in it. The method is on the model card.

Where Hemmingway fits, and where it does not

It fits when:

  • you have the facts but no draft: a reply, a hard email, a message you keep putting off
  • a reworded paragraph still sounds stiff and you want it to read like a person wrote it
  • you would rather get one good rewrite than pick from a list of options

It does not fit when:

  • you want suggestions to appear as you type in another app. Hemmingway will not underline things in your browser or your documents.
  • you rely on a citation generator, a plagiarism checker or an AI detector. It is a writing tool, not a study toolkit.
  • you write mostly in another language. It is English-first.
  • the work is meant to be your own words, such as coursework. We do not build Hemmingway to get past AI detectors or plagiarism checks.

Hemmingway vs QuillBot puts the two side by side.

How to choose

  1. Think about which QuillBot tool you open most. That is the job you are replacing.
  2. If it is the paraphraser, try a rewriter on three real sentences of your own, and read the results aloud.
  3. If it is the grammar checker, pick a checker that works where you write, not one you have to paste into.
  4. If you write in several languages, test each tool in your second language first.
  5. If you usually paste in something you did not want to write in the first place, try a tool that writes it from the facts. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and the plans are on pricing.

To get better at rewording by hand, how to paraphrase shows the method.

Common questions

What is the best alternative to QuillBot?

It depends on which part of QuillBot you use. For rewording sentences, a rewriter such as Wordtune is closest in kind. For checking, Grammarly or LanguageTool. If you would rather have the text written for you from a few facts, try Hemmingway. We have not tested the others, so we do not rank them.

Is there a free alternative to QuillBot?

Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and its paraphrasing tool opens that trial with your text filled in. For the other tools, check each one's own site for what you can use without paying, because that changes.

Can ChatGPT paraphrase like QuillBot?

Yes, if you paste the text in and ask it to reword it. A paraphraser is built around that one job. A chat assistant does whatever you ask, so it needs clearer instructions to keep your meaning and length.

Can Hemmingway reword text I already wrote?

Yes. Paste it into the paraphrasing tool or the chat and say how it should sound. It rewrites it once and keeps what you said.

Which QuillBot alternative is best for other languages?

LanguageTool and DeepL Write both describe support for many languages on their sites, so start with those and test them in the language you write in. Hemmingway is English-first and is not the right pick for this.
