Grammarly alternatives come in two kinds. Checkers and editors, such as Hemingway Editor and QuillBot, work on text you have already written: they catch mistakes, flag hard sentences and suggest rewrites. Writing tools, such as Hemmingway, ChatGPT and Claude, start from what you want to say and write the text for you.
So the first question is not which tool is best. It is which job you want done. If you like writing your own words and want them cleaner, you need a checker. If the problem is that the message never gets written, you need a tool that writes.

The line has blurred. Checkers such as Grammarly now offer AI rewriting too, and every writing assistant can proofread if you paste a draft in and ask. But each is still built around one of the two jobs, and it shows in how they work.
Checkers and editors
Grammarly
Grammarly checks your writing as you type: spelling, grammar, clarity and tone, with AI suggestions for rewriting. Its strength is that it sits inside the apps and sites you already use, so the checking happens where you write. If you are looking for an alternative, it is usually because you want something narrower, or something that does more of the writing. How it compares with Hemmingway.
Hemingway Editor
Hemingway Editor, with one m, is a readability editor. You paste in what you wrote and it highlights sentences that are long or hard to read, along with words you could cut or simplify. It does not write for you. It is a good fit if your problem is dense, over-long prose and you want to fix it yourself.
It is a different product from a different company, and not connected to us. Which is which.
QuillBot
QuillBot is best known as a paraphrasing tool: you give it a sentence or a paragraph and it rewords it, with a grammar checker alongside. It suits people who have the ideas down and want them said a different way.
Tools that write for you
Hemmingway
Hemmingway, with two m's, is our writing app, built on our own model, Hemmingway-1. You say who a message is for and what you want said, and it writes it the way you would. You get one version with nothing around it to cut. You can tell it who people are, and it writes to each of them in the way you usually do. In the apps for Mac, Windows and Android it can read your mail and chats and draft each reply for you to send. It also runs in the browser at /app/.
In our blind tests on eighty real email and message requests, Hemmingway-1 came first of the models we tested, and a judge asked which of two replies a person wrote picked its version more often than any other model's. Both tests are our own benchmarks, CommunicationBench and Human-Likeness, and we say so on the model card.
It is not a checker. It will not underline your typos as you type in another app. It is English-first, and it can be wrong and still sound certain, so read anything important before it goes.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is OpenAI's general assistant. It writes, and also codes, researches and explains. For writing, its current model in our tests, GPT-6 Astra, gave short messages that rarely came wrapped in commentary, but it scored lower than Hemmingway-1 and Claude on sounding like a person. Claude
Claude is Anthropic's assistant, with a reputation as a strong writer. In our tests Fable 5.1 was level with Hemmingway-1 on everyday messages and was the best long-story writer we have tested. It often put its messages inside notes and options you then have to cut. Hemmingway vs Claude.
How to tell which kind you need
- Look at the last three things you wrote and meant to send. Did you get stuck on the words, or on starting at all?
- If you had a draft and just wanted it cleaner, a checker is enough.
- If you had the facts but no draft, or a draft you kept rewriting, you want a tool that writes.
- If most of it was email and messages to people you know, pick a writing tool that knows who you are writing to.
- If you write in several languages every day, try any tool on your own examples first. Hemmingway is English-first.
An example of the difference
Say you need to tell a colleague you cannot make Thursday's meeting and suggest next week instead.
With a checker, you write the message yourself. The tool then flags a typo, suggests a shorter sentence, and perhaps says the tone reads a little abrupt. The message stays yours; the tool polishes it.
With a writing tool, you type the note, for example "tell Sam I can't make Thursday, offer next week", and it writes the message. You read it, change what you like, and send it. The words started with the tool, not with you.
Neither is wrong. They save different effort. A checker saves you the embarrassment of a mistake. A writing tool saves you the twenty minutes of staring at a blank reply.

Using both
Plenty of people do. A common pattern is to let a writing tool draft the message, then read it through yourself, or run a long piece through an editor before it goes out. Privacy
Checkers read what you type; writing tools read what you ask and often your mail. Look at each tool's privacy page before connecting an inbox. We never train our models on your chats, memory or People, and our privacy page lists what we keep.
Common questions
What is the best free alternative to Grammarly?

Is Hemmingway the same as Hemingway Editor?

Can ChatGPT replace Grammarly?
Partly. You can paste a draft into ChatGPT and ask it to fix the grammar, and it will. The difference is where it happens: Grammarly's main job is checking as you type inside the apps you already use, while a chat assistant works on what you paste into it.
Is QuillBot better than Grammarly?
They are aimed at different things. QuillBot is best known for rewording text you already have, and Grammarly for checking spelling, grammar and tone as you type. Both are built mainly around text you already have, where a writing assistant starts from what you want to say.
Should I use a grammar checker or an AI writer?
