Paste your text and Hemmingway returns it corrected: grammar, spelling, punctuation and typos. You can say whether you want British or American spelling, and list anything it should leave alone, such as a quote or an odd brand name. It works as an AI proofreader for an email, a post, an application or a page of an essay.
It fixes what is wrong and nothing else. A sentence that is correct is not reworded to sound cleverer, and an informal tone stays informal. No facts are changed. It corrects writing that is yours, and it is not a way to disguise someone else's.
What makes it work
- Say which English. "Colour" and "color" are both right. Tell it which you use, or it has to guess from your text.
- Tell it what is deliberate. Dialect in a quote, a name spelt an unusual way, a one-word sentence for effect. Anything it might take for a mistake.
- Proofread last. Finish rewriting first. Checking a paragraph you then rework means checking it twice.
- Read the names. Any checker can "correct" a surname, a product or a technical term it does not know. Look at every proper noun in what comes back.
An example
Given the text "Me and Dana has went through the figures yesterday, their's two invoices that dont match and I think its the suppliers mistake", with British spelling, a corrected text along these lines is what to expect:
Dana and I went through the figures yesterday. There are two invoices that don't match, and I think it's the supplier's mistake.
Every change is a correction. The words, the order and the plain tone are still the writer's.
What it does not do
It gives you clean text. It does not underline mistakes as you type in your email or your browser. Is the AI grammar checker free?
Yes. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You sign up once, and the corrected text is written in the chat.
Does it show what it changed?
By default it gives you the corrected text only, so you can paste it straight back. Ask in the chat for a list of the changes and it writes one under the text.
Is it a proofreader as well?
Yes, for what a proofreader catches in the text itself: spelling, punctuation, grammar, missing or doubled words. It does not check your facts, and for anything going to print a second human reader is still worth having.
Will it make my writing sound like AI?
It should not, because it is told to fix errors and leave your wording alone. Hemmingway-1, the model behind it, came first on sounding like a person in our own blind test, Human-Likeness. If a sentence comes back changed more than you wanted, keep your own.
Does it check languages other than English?
Hemmingway-1 is English-first, so it is at its best on English text. For another language, have someone who speaks it read the result.
