Paste a single sentence that is not working: too long, tangled, flat, or sharper than you meant. Say what bothers you about it if you can. Hemmingway sends back one rewritten sentence, not a list of ten to choose from.
The rewrite says what your sentence said. No detail is brought in from outside, and the names and figures stay where they were. If you want a different meaning, change the sentence first. The tool only changes how it is put.
What makes it work
- Name the fault. "Too long", "sounds cold" or "buries the point" tells it what to fix. Without that it aims for clearer and plainer.
- Find who is doing what. Tangled sentences usually hide the person acting: "a decision was not able to be reached" has no one in it. A good rewrite puts them back.
- One idea each. If your sentence carries two ideas, ask for two sentences. Splitting is often the whole fix.
- Put it back and read three in a row. The sentence before and the sentence after still have to fit. Watch for a word that is now repeated next door.
An example
Given the sentence "Due to the fact that the meeting was cancelled at short notice, we were not able to reach a decision with regard to the budget", with the complaint that it is too long and stiff, a rewrite along these lines is what to expect:
We could not decide on the budget because the meeting was cancelled at short notice.
Twenty-five words became fifteen, and the people doing the deciding now come first.
Common questions
Is the sentence rewriter free?
Yes. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You sign up once, and the new sentence is written in the chat.
Can it give me several versions of a sentence?
Yes. It gives one by default, because one good sentence is usually what you came for. Ask in the chat for three versions, or for one that is shorter, warmer or more formal, and it writes them.
Can I use it to reword a sentence from a book or an article?
You can, but new words do not make the idea yours. Name the source beside your version, or quote the sentence as it stands. It is not meant for handing in someone else's work as your own, and nothing here is built to beat a plagiarism checker. There is more in how to paraphrase.
Will it sound like AI?
It is built not to. Hemmingway-1, the model behind it, came first on sounding like a person in our own blind test, Human-Likeness. It still helps to read it aloud and change any word you would not use.
What if I need more than one sentence rewritten?
For sentences that belong together, use the paragraph rewriter, which also fixes the order they come in. If the sentence is only wrong in its grammar or spelling, the AI grammar checker corrects it and leaves your wording alone.
