What makes it work
- Paste it as you wrote it. Blunt, cross, all lower case: it only needs the facts and what you want.
- Say who it is to and what is between you. "A supplier we have used for years" and "a customer who has complained twice" call for different emails.
- Professional does not mean longer. A good rewrite is about the same length as yours, or shorter. If it came back padded, ask for it shorter.
- Check the request survived. What you need, and by when, should be in the first two lines.

Given the email "hi, still waiting on the invoice from last month, i asked twice already. need it today or we cant pay you this week", to a supplier of many years, to come across as professional and polite but clear that it is needed today, an email along these lines is what to expect:
