The jokes are built on your details. It does not make up an embarrassing story about a real person, and it is told not to hand you a ready-made joke with the name swapped in.
What makes a joke land
- True details are where the joke is. "Dad is careful with time" is nothing. "Thirty-one years and never once late" is a set-up.
- Tell it the room. A joke in a card is read by one person. A joke in a speech is heard by grandparents, children and the boss at once.
- Funny word last. Say it aloud. If there are words after the laugh, cut them.
- Use one. A speech with one good joke near the start is remembered as funny. Three in a row is a routine.

A topic, a card or a speech
For a topic with no person in it, such as golf, Mondays or the office printer, write what you have noticed about it in the details box. What you have seen yourself is funnier than the general idea.
In a card, follow the joke with one sincere line. In a speech, open with it and then say something true. The toast generator and the best man speech generator write the whole thing. For teasing a friend who is in on it, use the roast generator.
