Say what the occasion is, who you are toasting and one true thing about them, and Hemmingway writes the toast: a line to get the room's attention, the one thing, and the raised glass. It comes out short enough to say from memory with a drink in your hand.
It works with the one detail you give it. It will not pad a toast with a quote or a story that never happened. If you have nothing specific, tell it why everyone is there, and it keeps to that.
What makes it work
- One thought, not three. A toast with several stories in it is a speech, and there is a speech generator for that.
- End on the name. The last words are who you are drinking to, so the room knows when to lift their glasses.
- Say it, do not read it. Four or five sentences can be learned on the way there. Paper and a glass do not fit in the same hand.
An example
Asked for a toast to your parents at their 40th wedding anniversary dinner, with the detail that Dad still walks on the traffic side of the pavement and Mum still pretends not to notice, a toast along these lines is what to expect. This one is the whole thing.
Can I have everyone for a moment.
Forty years in, Dad still walks on the traffic side of the pavement.
And Mum still pretends not to notice.
That, to me, is what forty years looks like.
Please raise your glasses. To Mum and Dad.
What to put in for each occasion
| Occasion | The one true thing | Ends on |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding | something you have seen the couple do for each other | both their names |
| Birthday | a habit of theirs the whole room knows | "Happy birthday" and the name |
| Retirement | what the place will miss once they have gone | the name, and what comes next |
| Dinner with friends | why you are glad this table is together | "To us", or the host |
If the occasion needs more than a minute, there are tools for a birthday speech and a retirement speech.
Common questions
Is the toast generator free?
Yes. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You sign up once, and the toast is written in the chat.
How long should a toast be?
Under a minute. Thirty seconds is fine. People are holding a full glass and waiting to drink from it.
What is the difference between a toast and a speech?
A toast is one thought and a raised glass. A speech has stories and thanks. For a full speech at a wedding, use the wedding speech generator.
How do you end a toast?
Ask people to raise their glasses, then say who the toast is to: "To Maria", or "To the happy couple". Stop there and drink. How to give a toast covers standing up and saying it as well as writing it.
Will it sound like AI?
It is built not to. Hemmingway-1, the model behind it, came first on sounding like a person in our own blind test, Human-Likeness. It still helps to read it aloud and change any word you would not use.
