Say whose birthday it is, which one, and a story or two about them, and Hemmingway writes a birthday speech to give at the party. It is short, it is about the person and not the number, and it ends with a raised glass.
The stories have to come from you. It will not make up what your mum did in 1985 or guess at a nickname. Give it things that happened.
What makes it work
A birthday party mixes people who have never met: family, school friends, colleagues, neighbours. The speech has to work for all of them.
- Pick stories every group can follow. A story from work needs a line of setting up for the family, and the other way round. Say who will be in the room and it adds that line.
- One age joke at most. At a 60th, everyone has made the joke already. The speech is where you say what nobody has said yet.
- Pair an old story with a recent one. Together they show the person has not changed, which is the nicest thing to say at a big birthday.
An example
Asked for a speech from a son for his mum, Rosalind, who is turning 60, with the story that for six years she drove a minibus of his teammates to every away match and never once knew the score, an opening along these lines is what to expect. This is the beginning and one story.
Hello, everyone. For anyone I haven't met, I'm Rosalind's son.
For six years, Mum drove a minibus full of my teammates to every away match.
Every one. For six years.
In all that time, she never once knew the score.
She wasn't there for the football. She was there for us.
The full speech adds a second story and the toast. To plan it yourself first, how to write a speech sets out the order.
Common questions
Is the birthday speech generator free?
Yes. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You sign up once, and the speech is written in the chat.
How long should a birthday speech be?
Two to three minutes. People are standing with a drink and the cake is waiting.
Can it write a speech for my own birthday party?
Yes. Say it is your own birthday in the first field, and use the stories field for the people you want to thank and why. It writes a short thank-you speech in your voice.
Can it be a roast?
It can tease, if you ask for that in the tone field and the stories are ones the person laughs at too. For something sharper, the roast generator is built for it.
Will it sound like AI?
It is built not to. Hemmingway-1, the model behind it, came first on sounding like a person in our own blind test, Human-Likeness. It still helps to read it aloud and change any word you would not use.
What if I only need a line for the card?
The birthday message generator writes a short message for a card or a text, and the toast generator writes a few sentences to say with a glass in your hand.
