What makes it work
A birthday message works when the person could not have got it from anyone else. The generic ones ("hope you have a great day") are fine, but they are forgettable. This tool is set up to lean on the one real thing you give it and keep the rest short.
- Give one real detail. A shared joke, a habit, something they did this year. One good detail beats a list of five.
- Say which birthday, if it matters. A 30th, a 60th or a first birthday changes what fits. For most birthdays, leave it blank.
- Pick the tone. A colleague, a grandparent and a best friend should not get the same message.
