What makes a Christmas message personal
- One line about the year. Their move, the new job, the dog. It turns a card into a card for them.
- Know what kind of Christmas they are having. After a death, an illness or a lost job, "merry" can sting. "Thinking of you this Christmas" is kinder, and the tool switches to it if you say what happened.
- Choose the greeting on purpose. "Merry Christmas" for people who keep it. "Season's greetings" or "Happy holidays" for clients, and for people who do not.
- Do not send a newsletter. Two lines of your news at most. The card is about them.
An example
Asked for a warm, chatty card to an aunt and uncle called Rosalind and Piet, with the notes that they moved to the coast in the spring, that your youngest started school, and that you will not see them at Christmas but are visiting in February, and with "Merry Christmas" and nothing religious as the greeting, a message along these lines is what to expect:

A colleague gets a thank you for something from the working year and a wish for a proper break. A client gets two lines: thanks for the year's work, and no sales talk. Say who it is in the first box and the message is pitched to match.
