Say who you are thanking and what they did or gave you, and Hemmingway writes the thank you. It names the thing, says what it did for you, and ends there. It also writes a thank you note for a card, or a thank you letter: say which in the form.
It will not make up a gift, a favour or a feeling you did not mention, so a vague second box gives a vague message.
What makes it work
A thank you is remembered when it proves you noticed. "Thanks for everything" could be sent to anyone. "Thanks for driving forty minutes to bring my keys" could only be sent to one person.
- Name the exact thing. The casserole, the lift to the airport, the reference they wrote. Not "your kindness".
- Say what it changed. What you did with the gift, or what the favour saved you from.
- Do not promise to repay it. "I owe you" turns a gift into a debt. Thank them and stop.
An example
Asked for a warm, slightly funny card to a neighbour called Irene who fed the cat and watered the tomatoes for the two weeks you were away, with the note that you did not have to cut the trip short and that the tomatoes did better than when you water them, a thank you along these lines is what to expect:
Dear Irene,
Thank you for feeding the cat and watering the tomatoes for the two weeks we were away. Because of you we didn't have to cut the trip short.
The tomatoes did better with you than they do with us. We are trying not to take it personally.
Change a word, or ask in the chat for a plainer version, then write it in the card yourself.
A text, a note or a letter
A text is two or three lines. A card is three to five. A letter, for a teacher or someone who helped over months, can run to three short paragraphs.
