What makes a compliment land
- Praise what they did or chose. The way they handled a meeting, the meal they cooked, the song they picked.
- Say what you noticed. "You got the two quietest people talking" proves you were watching. "Great job" does not.
- Stop after it. No "but", no favour to ask straight afterwards, no comparison with anyone else.
- At work, keep it to the work. Looks and clothes are best left alone with colleagues.

- A friend. Something they made, or the way they showed up for you.

- A stranger. The coat, the dog, the talk they gave. Keep it short.
