Type what you want to say, roughly, the way you would tell a colleague. Add whose account it is and the voice, and Hemmingway writes three versions of a post for X, the site that used to be Twitter.
The posts contain your facts only. If you did not give a number, a date or a name, it will not supply one, which matters on a site where a wrong detail gets quoted back at you.
What makes a post land
- One point. A post that announces, explains and thanks all at once reads as noise. Three things to say is a thread, not a longer post.
- Bring the real detail. "We shipped dark mode" is an announcement. "Two years of requests, three weeks of work" is something people repeat.
- Start where the point is. Cut the run-up. "Excited to share that" tells the reader nothing.
- Say who is reading. A post to customers and a post to people in your trade use different words for the same news.
An example
Asked for a post saying that a small note-taking app shipped dark mode today, after two years of people asking, and that it took one developer three weeks, for followers who are mostly users and other developers, asking them to try it and report what is broken, in a plain and slightly self-mocking voice with no hashtags, posts along these lines are what to expect:
Dark mode is live. You asked for two years. It took one developer three weeks. Sorry about the rest.
Dark mode, finally. Two years of requests, three weeks of work. Try it and tell us what we broke.
X limits how long a post can be, so check yours in the post box before you send, and ask in the chat for a shorter cut if you need one.
Replies and threads
For a reply, paste the post you are answering into the first field and say what you think of it. For a thread, say how many posts you want and what each should cover.
