Type who it is to, your job, today's date and your last day. Hemmingway writes the notice: that you are resigning, that this is your two weeks notice, the date of your last day, a line of thanks and an offer to help hand over. Four to six sentences is all a two weeks notice letter needs.
Nothing goes in that you did not type. It gives no reason for leaving unless you add one, and it does not work out the date for you, so count the fourteen days yourself and check them against your contract or handbook.
What makes it work
- Tell your boss in person first. The letter is the record of that conversation, handed over or emailed straight after.
- Date it and name the last day. "Two weeks from today" leaves room for argument. "My last shift will be Sunday 24 January" does not.
- Give no reasons. You do not have to explain, and whatever you write stays on file.
- Be ready to go the same day. Some employers end things when notice is given. Take your personal files off the work computer before you hand the letter in.
