Say who is leaving and what it was like to work with them, and Hemmingway writes your goodbye: a couple of lines for the card going round, a message on their last day, or an email to a boss who is moving on.
It sticks to what you typed. It will not invent a project you shared, a nickname or a reason for them going.
What makes a goodbye worth reading
- Thank them for one thing they did. "You checked my work for a month and never sighed" will be remembered. "You'll be missed" will be the line above and below yours.
- Count the other signatures. In a group card, two or three lines. Save the longer message for a private note.
- For a boss, be concrete and plain. Name something they taught you or a time they backed you. Praise in general reads as flattery.
- Say nothing about why. Not the restructure, not the new salary, not "escaping". You may not know the whole story.
An example
Asked for a warm line for the group card to a team lead called Bronagh, after three years together on the payroll team, where she checked every run in your first month and never made you feel slow, and who is going to a new job in Cork, a message along these lines is what to expect:
Bronagh, thank you for three years on payroll, and most of all for my first month. You checked every run I did and never once made me feel slow.
Cork is getting a good one. Good luck with the new job.
Two lines, one real memory, and room left on the card for everyone else. Copy it in by hand.
If you are the one leaving
Put yourself in the first box, for example "me, to my team of six", and describe the time you had with them. It then writes your own goodbye to colleagues instead. If you have not told your manager yet, that comes first, and the resignation letter generator does that part.
