How to end a relationship by text, kindly

How to write a breakup text that is clear and kind: when a text is fine and when it is not, a simple structure, short examples, and how to use AI honestly.

By the Hemmingway team ·

A kind breakup text is clear in the first two lines, takes responsibility for your decision, says one honest and generous thing, and ends the conversation without leaving a door open you do not mean. It does not list the other person's faults, does not blame, and does not hint that you might change your mind. Clear is kind. A vague message that leaves someone hoping is the cruellest version.

First decide whether a text is the right way at all. After a few dates, it is normal and often welcome. After a long relationship, or with a partner you live with, it usually is not. Below: that choice, a simple structure, short examples, and how AI can help you find honest words.

When a text is fine, and when it is not

A text is usually fine when:

  • You have been on a few dates, or talking for a few weeks.
  • Things have faded on both sides and a text simply makes it clear.
  • You do not feel safe meeting in person. Your safety comes first, always. If someone has been controlling, threatening or violent, a text, a call from a safe place, or ending contact through someone you trust is right, and you do not owe them a meeting.

A text is usually not the right way when:

  • You have been together for months or years.
  • You live together, share money, children or pets, or have plans that need untangling.
  • The other person has no idea anything is wrong.

In those cases, a short message can still help, but only to ask for a time to talk: "Can we talk properly tonight? There's something important I need to say." Then say it in person or on a call.

The structure of a kind breakup text

  1. Say it early and plainly. "I don't want to keep seeing each other" or "I want to end things between us". In the first or second sentence.
  2. Own the decision. "I've realised" or "I don't feel" rather than "you never" or "we just". It is your choice, so say it as yours.
  3. One honest, generous line. Something true that you valued. Only if it is true.
  4. A short reason, if it helps. One clause, not a case against them. "I'm not feeling the connection I want" is enough.
  5. Close clearly. Wish them well. Do not promise friendship unless you mean it, and do not leave an opening you are not offering.

Most kind breakup texts are three to five sentences.

What to leave out

  • "Maybe" and "for now". "I think we should take a break" when you mean it is over leaves them waiting.
  • A list of reasons. Each one invites an argument, and some will hurt for years.
  • Blame and "it's you". A breakup text is not the place to settle it.
  • Guilt. "This is so hard for me" asks them to comfort you.
  • Manipulation of any kind. No testing whether they will fight for you, no threatening to leave to get a reaction, no ending it to punish them. If you are not sure you want to end things, have a conversation instead of sending a text.
  • Friendship you do not mean. "Let's stay friends" is kind only if you will actually stay friends.

Examples

Change the details so it sounds like you. These are shapes to follow, not text to copy.

After a few dates

Hey Sam, I've really enjoyed getting to know you, but I don't feel the spark I'm looking for, so I don't think we should see each other again. I didn't want to just go quiet on you. Good luck with the new job, I hope it's great.

After a couple of months

Hi Maya, I've been thinking a lot and I've decided I want to end things between us. I've had a really good time with you and I'm grateful for it, but I don't see this going where either of us would want. I'm sorry to say it by message, I'm happy to talk on the phone if that would help. I wish you all the best.

Asking to talk, for a longer relationship

Can we talk properly tonight, just the two of us? There's something important I need to say and I don't want to do it over text.

After you send it

Give them room. Answer questions kindly and briefly, and do not reopen the decision. If they are angry, "I understand, and I'm sorry this hurts" is enough. If you need to stop contact, say so once, clearly, and keep to it.

Using AI to write a breakup text

AI can help when you keep writing and deleting the message, or worry about sounding cold. Left to itself it tends to write something stiff, or padded with phrases like "this journey". The person receiving it knows how you talk, so a message that does not sound like you lands worse.

Use AI for the words, never for the decision. And do not ask it to make a message that will keep someone hooked, make them feel guilty, or make them think it was their fault. That is not what a kind breakup is.

  1. Say how long you have been together and how you usually text each other.
  2. Give the real reason in your own words, even if you only want a short version in the message.
  3. Say whether you want to stay friends. The AI should not add an offer you are not making.
  4. Ask for clear and short. Under 70 words, with the decision in the first two sentences.
  5. Ban the stock phrases. No "it's not you, it's me", no "journey", no "I need to prioritise myself".
  6. Read it as if you were receiving it. Then change anything you would not say.

A prompt you can adapt:

"Help me write a breakup text to [name]. We've been seeing each other for [how long]. My honest reason: [in my words]. One thing I genuinely liked: [true detail]. I [do / don't] want to stay friends. Say it clearly in the first two sentences, own the decision, no blame, no maybe, no guilt. Under 70 words, the way I'd text them. Only give me the message."

Doing it with Hemmingway

Hemmingway is built for everyday messages to people. Its model, Hemmingway-1, gives you the message itself, one version, with no note about the tone at the end, and it keeps to what you tell it rather than inventing a reason or a promise. In our own tests of everyday messages, CommunicationBench, it came first of the models we compared, and it came third of 27 models on EQ-Bench 4, a public test of emotional intelligence that we ran ourselves with the official harness. Fable 5 and Kimi K3 scored a little higher there. The EQ-Bench 4 results.

A model does not know the person, and it can sound sure while being wrong. The decision and the final words are yours. And if things feel heavy, Hemmingway is not a substitute for talking to a friend or someone you trust.

Common questions

Is it okay to break up over text?

After a few dates, yes, and a clear text is kinder than going quiet. After a long relationship, or if you live together, it is usually better to talk in person or on a call, and a text can ask for that conversation. If you do not feel safe meeting, a text is the right choice.

What do you say in a breakup text?

Say clearly that you want to end things, in the first sentence or two. Own the decision, add one honest and kind line, and wish them well. Leave out blame, lists of reasons and anything that sounds like maybe.

How do you end a relationship without hurting them?

You cannot always avoid hurt, but you can avoid adding to it. Be clear, be brief, do not blame, and do not leave them hoping if the decision is final. Kindness in a breakup mostly means honesty without cruelty.

Should I give a reason when I break up with someone?

A short, honest reason can help, as long as it is about how you feel rather than what is wrong with them. "I don't feel the connection I want" is enough. A long list of reasons tends to start an argument or leave lasting hurt.

Is it wrong to use AI to write a breakup message?

Not if the decision and the feelings are yours and the message is honest. Use AI to find clear words, then change anything that does not sound like you. Never use it to write something meant to guilt, confuse or keep someone hooked.
