Condolence message generator

A free condolence message generator. Say who it is for and who has died, and Hemmingway helps you write a short, gentle message of sympathy in plain words.

Opens Hemmingway with this filled in. Free to try, no card needed.

When someone you know loses a person, it can be hard to find any words at all. Fill in who you are writing to and who has died, and Hemmingway helps you write a short, gentle message of sympathy. You read it, change anything that does not feel like you, and send it yourself.

It uses only what you tell it. It will not invent a memory of the person, a quality they had or a religious belief. If you knew them, add one true thing. If you did not, leave that blank and the message will simply say you are sorry and thinking of them.

What makes it work

A good condolence message is short. It says you are sorry, it may share one thing you remember, and it asks nothing of the person grieving. This tool is set up to do that and to leave out the phrases that can hurt, however kindly they are meant.

  • Name who has died, simply. "Her father" or "your mum, Ann" is enough. You do not need to explain how or when.
  • Add a memory only if it is real. A small, true detail means more than a general compliment. If you did not know them, leave it out.
  • Offer something only if you will do it. Covering a shift or bringing food is kinder than "let me know if you need anything", but only if you mean it.

An example

Asked for a message to a colleague called Priya after her father died, with the memory that he always came to her concerts and sat in the front row, and the offer to cover her shifts next week, a message along these lines is what to expect:

Priya, I'm so sorry about your father.
I remember you saying he came to every one of your concerts and always sat in the front row.
I can cover your shifts next week.

It does not tell her how to feel or ask her to reply. If you want it shorter, more formal or for a card, ask in the chat and it rewrites it.

Common questions

Is the condolence message generator free?

Yes. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You sign up once, and the message is written in the chat.

Is it all right to use AI for a condolence message?

It is a draft to help you start, not a replacement for your own feeling. Many people know what they want to say but freeze on the first line. Read what it writes, change the words that are not yours, and send it only when it sounds like you. The guide on writing a condolence message has more on what to say and what to avoid.

Can it write for a sympathy card?

Yes. Say it is for a card and ask for two or three lines. A card needs less than a message, and it will keep it brief.

Does anyone else see what I write?

Your chats are never used for training. The message is written in your chat and goes nowhere unless you send it yourself.
