Say what the rap is about and give it names, places and details, and Hemmingway writes the bars. They come back as lines to say over a beat, with rhymes at the ends and inside the lines.

What makes a verse work
- Count in bars. A bar is one line across four beats, and a standard verse is sixteen of them. Ask for 8, 16 or 32.
- Rhyme inside the line. End rhymes alone sound like a nursery rhyme. Rap gets its bounce from rhymes and near-rhymes packed into the middle of the bar, and from rhyming two or three syllables at a time.
- Be specific. A red Corsa, a roundabout, an examiner called Keith. Named things are where punchlines come from.
- Say who will hear it. A birthday roast, a school project, a wedding surprise and your own track each want a different voice.
An example
Asked for a playful, clean, old-school rap about a little sister called Dani passing her driving test on the fourth try, who stalled at the same roundabout three times, had an examiner called Keith and drives a red Corsa, opening bars along these lines are what to expect:
Fourth time lucky, yeah, Dani got the pass,
red Corsa rolling and she's easy on the gas.
Three times that roundabout left her in a stall,
now Keith's ticking boxes and she's cruising past it all.
If a bar has too many syllables to say in time, tell it which one and it trims it.
