Give it the name, what the business or product does and who it is for. Hemmingway writes ten short lines to choose from. A slogan and a tagline are the same job here, so ask for either.
The lines are built from your answers alone. It does not borrow a claim like "award-winning" or "number one" that you never made, which is also why a vague answer gets you vague slogans.
What makes a slogan stick
- Say what it really does. "We help businesses grow" gives it nothing to hold. "Same-day bike repairs for commuters" does.
- Pick one point. A line that promises speed, price and friendliness at once promises nothing.
- Say it across the counter. If you would feel silly saying the line to a customer's face, it is the wrong line.
- Expect to throw most away. Keep two of the ten, ask for ten more like those, and stop when one still reads well the next morning.
An example
Asked for slogans for Tideline Bikes, which repairs and sells second-hand bikes for commuters in Bristol and does most repairs the same day, with "you will be back on the road today" as the point and a dry, friendly voice with no puns, slogans along these lines are what to expect:
Back on the road today.
Bring it in this morning. Ride it home tonight.
Used bikes, properly fixed.
The commuter's bike shop.
Second-hand bikes for people with somewhere to be.
None of them would fit a bakery or a bank, which is the test.
Slogan or tagline?
People use the two words for the same thing. Where they are told apart, a tagline stays with the name for years and a slogan belongs to one campaign. Say which you need: a tagline should still be true in five years, while a slogan can mention this season's offer.
The product description generator writes the listing, the headline generator the line at the top of a page, and the Instagram bio generator the few lines under your name.
Common questions
Is the slogan generator free?
Yes. Hemmingway has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You sign up once, and the slogans are written in the chat.
What is the difference between a slogan and a tagline?
Often none. When people do separate them, a tagline is the lasting line attached to the brand's name and a slogan is tied to a campaign or a single product.
How long should a slogan be?
Short enough to say in one breath and read on a passing van. Three to seven words is a good range to aim for.
Can I trademark a slogan it writes?
The tool cannot tell you. It does not check if a line is already used or registered by someone else. Search for the exact words before you print anything, and ask a trademark professional before you register it. Hemmingway is not for legal decisions.
Will it sound like AI?
It is built not to. Hemmingway-1, the model behind it, came first on sounding like a person in our own blind test, Human-Likeness. With slogans the quickest check is to say each one aloud and drop any you would not say yourself.
