If ChatGPT keeps refusing the fiction, roleplay or frank questions you bring to it, there's no shortage of alternatives. They come in four kinds: open models you run yourself, privacy-focused assistants, character-chat sites and adults-only apps such as our own Hemmingway Unlocked. None of them is completely without a filter. What differs is what each one allows, what it keeps about you and how good the writing is.
This guide is for adults choosing an uncensored ChatGPT alternative. It covers what "no filter" can honestly mean, seven questions to ask before you sign up, the four kinds side by side, and where Hemmingway Unlocked fits.
Why people look for a ChatGPT alternative with no filter
ChatGPT runs one set of rules for an enormous audience that includes teenagers, and its filters lean towards refusing when they aren't sure. For most everyday tasks you never notice. People who go looking for ChatGPT without censorship are usually adults doing one of these:
- Writing fiction or roleplay with sexual content. OpenAI's rules don't allow it, even between adult characters.
- Writing dark fiction. Violence, horror and crime get softened, summarised or refused, even when the context is obviously a story.
- Asking frank questions. Questions about sex, drugs or other adult topics can come back hedged into something that doesn't answer them.
- Wanting privacy. Some people would simply rather their conversations weren't stored on a company's servers.
OpenAI said in October 2025 that it would let verified adults use ChatGPT for erotica. The plan was delayed, then paused indefinitely in March 2026. As of September 2026 there's no new date, so the old rules still apply. Why ChatGPT refuses roleplay goes into the reasons.
What no filter can and can't mean
Every hosted AI has limits. The company running it answers to the law, to its payment providers and to the app stores. What differs is where those limits sit. Think of it as three layers.
- The law. The same for everyone. No service can legally offer sexual content involving minors, and none will help with serious real-world crimes.
- The company's policy. This is where services really differ. Some ban all sexual content, some allow it for verified adults, and some allow nearly everything that's legal.
- The model's training. Even under a relaxed policy, a model trained to refuse will still hedge and soften. An uncensored model has been trained or set up not to.
Open models you run yourself remove the second layer entirely: there's nobody's policy but yours. You're still limited by your hardware and by what the model learned.
When a site sells itself as a ChatGPT alternative with no restrictions, or promises "no filter, no limits", read it as marketing. The honest version is "fewer filters, and here are the ones that are left".
How to choose an uncensored ChatGPT alternative
Seven questions to ask before you switch.
- What does it allow, in writing? Look for terms or a content policy you can actually read. "Uncensored" on a landing page tells you nothing.
- Does it check your age? Serving adult content with no age check at all is a warning sign about everything else.
- Where do your chats live? On the company's servers, in your browser, or on your own computer? How long are they kept, and can staff read them? If you want a private AI chat, this matters more than anything else on the list.
- Does it train on your chats? Some services use conversations to improve their models unless you opt out.
- How do you pay, and how do you cancel? Many payment providers, Stripe included, won't touch adult content. Adult services often take payment another way. Make sure you know how to stop paying.
- Is the writing any good? Test it on something you care about. Many unfiltered models are small and repetitive.
- Can you use it elsewhere? An API lets you connect it to your own tools, such as SillyTavern.
The four kinds of alternative
Open models you run yourself
Tools like Ollama, LM Studio and KoboldCpp run open-weight models on your own computer. Front ends like SillyTavern or Open WebUI give you a chat window. Nothing leaves your machine, and no company decides what you can write. The catch is setup time and hardware: models that write well need a powerful graphics card, and the ones that fit on a laptop are noticeably weaker. Privacy-focused assistants
Hosted assistants such as Venice sell themselves on privacy and fewer refusals. There's nothing to install, and you get a normal chat app. You're trusting the company's promises about what it keeps, so read its privacy policy yourself. We haven't tested Venice, so we don't rate it.
Character-chat sites
Sites like Janitor AI and SpicyChat are built for roleplay with characters, many of them made by other users. A lot of that roleplay is NSFW. They're a good fit if characters are what you're after, but less suited to general questions or longer writing. Chats usually live on their servers, and the models underneath vary.
Adults-only apps
The fourth kind is an ordinary AI app with a separate side just for adults, where an uncensored model is switched on and you confirm your age before you start. That's what Hemmingway Unlocked is.

Switching is quick if you bring the right things with you.
- Copy your custom instructions. Anything you've told ChatGPT about how you like to write, and any character descriptions, can go into your first message in the new app.
- Start fresh instead of pasting an old chat. Summarise where your story or project stands in a few lines. A long pasted history mostly adds noise.
- Be specific about what you want. Tone, length, point of view, and what's in and out of bounds. Uncensored models take instructions more literally, so say exactly what you mean.
- Keep ChatGPT for what it's good at. Plenty of people use one app for work and another for fiction.

Common questions
Is there a version of ChatGPT with no filter?
No. ChatGPT always follows OpenAI's usage policies, and OpenAI's planned adult mode has been on hold since March 2026. Jailbreak prompts that claim to remove the filter are unreliable and can get an account restricted. A tool built for adults is the honest route.
