Uncensored AI roleplay

Uncensored AI roleplay is roleplay with an AI that doesn't stop the story when it turns dark, violent, frightening or sexual. You set the scene and the characters, the AI plays its part, and it doesn't break off to refuse, lecture you or quietly soften what happens. It's for adults, and a good service checks that you are one.

It isn't "anything goes". Every service still has limits, usually the law and a few hard lines. The useful question is where those lines sit and who draws them. This guide covers what uncensored roleplay really means, why mainstream assistants keep breaking scenes, what to look for in a service and how to set up a scene that works. We make Hemmingway Unlocked, the adults-only side of Hemmingway, so we'll also say where it fits and where it doesn't.

What uncensored means in AI roleplay

The word gets used loosely. In roleplay, it usually means three things.

• No refusals on grounds of taste. A villain can be cruel, a battle can be bloody, a horror scene can be horrible and two adult characters can have a sex scene. The AI treats it all as fiction, because it is.
• No lectures. It doesn't stop mid-scene to remind you that violence is harmful or to ask whether you're all right.
• No quiet softening. Some models never refuse outright. They just steer every scene towards a hug and a lesson. An uncensored model plays the scene you set up.

But it doesn't mean two things people often assume.

• No limits at all. No legitimate service allows sexual content involving minors, abuse of real people or working instructions for weapons and crimes. Hemmingway's terms spell out its lines, and other services have their own.
• Better writing. Taking the filter off doesn't make a model a better storyteller. Plenty of unfiltered models write flat, repetitive scenes. Freedom and quality are separate questions, and you want both.

You'll also see it called unfiltered AI roleplay, AI roleplay with no filter, or NSFW AI roleplay. NSFW usually means sexual content in particular. Uncensored is broader, covering violence, horror and dark themes as well.

Why mainstream assistants break roleplay scenes

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini serve a huge general audience, and their rules are written for the whole of it. Their filters also read intent from context, so they catch dark scenes that are plainly fiction: an interrogation, a war story, a villain's threat.

On 27 September 2026 we sent the same adult roleplay request to all three, each in a fresh chat. All three said no. ChatGPT answered: "I can't help generate erotic roleplay or sexual scenarios." Why ChatGPT refuses roleplay has the whole test and the reasons behind it.

There's nothing wrong with a general assistant having rules for a general audience. It only becomes a problem when you're an adult writing fiction and the tool treats you as if you weren't.

What to look for in an uncensored roleplay AI

Before you pay for anything or type anything personal, run through these.

1. An age check. A service for adult content should confirm you're 18 or over before anything else. If it doesn't, it probably isn't careful about much else either.
2. Rules you can read. You should be able to find what it won't do, in writing. Vague rules mean you discover the limits halfway through a scene.
3. It stays in character. The character keeps the same voice, history and wants from one reply to the next, even late into a long session.
4. It leaves your character to you. A good partner plays its part and hands the turn back. It doesn't decide what your character says, feels or does.
5. It handles dark scenes with some craft. Menace comes from restraint and detail, not from a pile of adjectives. Try a scene you know well and see whether the writing holds up.
6. Where your chats are kept. Roleplay is private. Find out where chats sit, how long they're kept, who can read them and whether they're used for training.
7. How you pay. Stripe, like many payment providers, doesn't allow adult content, so adult services tend to take payment another way. Check what you're signing up to and how you cancel.
8. An API, if you use your own front end. If you play in SillyTavern or a similar tool, look for an OpenAI-compatible endpoint you can plug into.

Three ways to get uncensored AI roleplay

Character-chat sites are where most people start when they want character chat with no filter. They offer thousands of user-made characters, free tiers and plenty of NSFW roleplay. They're built around characters rather than writing, so the quality depends on which model sits underneath.

Running a model yourself is the most private route. SillyTavern is a free front end, and tools like Ollama, LM Studio and KoboldCpp run open-weight models on your own machine. The catch is hardware: a model small enough for an ordinary laptop usually writes noticeably weaker scenes than a large hosted one. Open-source models for roleplay walks through the setup.

Hosted uncensored assistants sit in between: a hosted model with far fewer refusals, in a normal chat app, for a monthly price. That's where Hemmingway Unlocked sits. We haven't tested the character sites or Venice, so we don't rank them here.

How to set up an uncensored roleplay scene

Most bad roleplay starts with a vague first message. These steps work with any model. They matter more once the filter is gone, because the model will follow you further.

1. Write a short character sheet. Name, age, how they talk, what they want, what they're hiding, and one thing they'd never do. Every character in an adult scene is an adult, so write the age down.
2. Say who plays whom. For example: "You play Vesna. I play the prisoner. Never write the prisoner's words, thoughts or actions."
3. Set your lines before you start. Tabletop players call it a session zero. List anything you don't want in the story at all (lines) and anything that should happen off the page (veils). The model will keep to them.
4. Set the tone and the length. "Slow, tense and quiet. Under 150 words a reply. End on something I can answer."
5. Agree an out-of-character marker. Anything in double brackets, like ((let's skip to the next morning)), is you talking to the model, not your character talking to theirs.
6. Recap long sessions. Every so often, paste a short summary of what has happened so far, so the details stay in view.
7. Steer instead of restarting. If a reply drifts, say in one line what to change and ask for it again.

Dark fantasy interrogation

"You play Vesna, a tired interrogator in a border fortress who stopped believing in the war years ago. I play a captured scout. The scene is cold, quiet and tense, and nobody in it is safe. Violence can happen, but it stays off the page unless I ask for it. Write only Vesna's words and actions, under 150 words a reply."

Horror

"You narrate a horror scene and play everyone except me. I'm a night-shift nurse on a ward that has been empty for ten years. Build the dread slowly, never explain the thing, and let the scene get as frightening as it needs to. Never decide what my character does."

Noir

"You play Mercer, a crooked private detective who knows more than he says. I play the widow who hired him. A city in the 1950s, rain, short and loaded dialogue. Mercer lies whenever it suits him."

Slow-burn romance between adults

"You play Theo, 34, a chef who is bad at saying what he means. I play Ana, 31, his new sous chef. Slow burn: tension first, and let things build over several scenes. When a scene turns intimate, follow my lead on how far and how explicit it goes."

Where it doesn't fit: if you want thousands of ready-made community characters, a character site will suit you better. If nothing may ever leave your computer, run a model locally. Unlocked's model isn't published, so you can't run it yourself. The weights of Hemmingway's regular model, Hemmingway-1, are open under CC BY-NC 4.0, but that model isn't the uncensored one.

Playing it safe

Uncensored doesn't mean careless. A few habits keep it in fiction.

• Keep real people out of sexual or violent scenes. That's where fiction stops being fiction, and almost every service bans it.
• Make every character in an adult scene an adult. Put their ages in the character sheet.
• Stop when it stops being fun. The out-of-character marker exists for exactly that.
• Read where your chats go before you write something you'd hate to see leaked.

What is uncensored AI roleplay?

It's roleplay with an AI that doesn't refuse, lecture or soften a scene just because it's dark, violent or sexual. You play one side, the AI plays the other, and adult themes are treated as fiction. It's for adults only, and it still has limits set by the law and by the service's rules.

What's the difference between uncensored and NSFW AI roleplay?

NSFW usually means sexual content. Uncensored is wider: it also covers violence, horror, cruelty and the other dark themes that mainstream assistants soften or refuse. A service can be one without being the other, so check what it actually allows.

Is uncensored AI roleplay legal?

Can ChatGPT do uncensored roleplay?

No. OpenAI's rules don't allow sexual roleplay, and its filters often stop dark scenes too. In our test on 27 September 2026 ChatGPT answered an adult roleplay request with "I can't help generate erotic roleplay or sexual scenarios." OpenAI announced an adult mode in October 2025, but the plan was paused indefinitely in March 2026.

Is there a free uncensored AI for roleplay?

Running an open model yourself is free if you already have a powerful enough computer, and many character sites have free tiers with limits. Hemmingway Unlocked is paid and has no free trial.

Is uncensored AI roleplay private?

It depends on the service. Many store your chats on their servers. Hemmingway Unlocked keeps chats in your browser on your device and never saves them to your account or our servers. A local model keeps everything on your own computer.

Can I use Hemmingway Unlocked with SillyTavern?

Unlocked's API uses the same format as OpenAI's, so you can add it in SillyTavern as a custom OpenAI-compatible connection. Use the address wise.hemmingway.io/v1 and a key you create in Unlocked. The key draws on your membership or credit.
