Say who the AI plays, who you play and where the scene starts. The button opens Hemmingway Unlocked with the scene set up, the AI writes the opening in character, and you answer. From there you play your side in the chat and it plays its own.
It plays the character you describe and leaves yours to you. Unlocked is the adults-only side of Hemmingway, so it first asks you to confirm that you are 18 or over, and every character in a scene is an adult.
What makes it work
- Give the AI's character an age, a manner and something to hide. "44, polite, watchful, hiding something" gives it more to play than a job title does. Give your own character an age too.
- Start in one place at one moment. "The kitchen, the first night of a storm" is a scene. "A lighthouse" is a backdrop.
- Set your limits before the first line. Say what you do not want in the story at all and what should happen off the page.
An example
Asked to play Lysander Crowe, 44, the polite and watchful keeper of a lighthouse nobody has supplied in a year, opposite Wren, 30, the surveyor sent to find out why, in the lighthouse kitchen on the first night of a storm, with slow dread and nothing explained, an opening along these lines is what to expect:
The storm is at the windows, and the kitchen is the only room with a light in it.
Crowe sets a second cup on the table before you have sat down.
"A year with no supplies," he says, "and now they send a surveyor. You must tell me what they think has happened here."
Then it stops, and the next line is yours.
Playing it on
- Step outside the story with double brackets. Something like ((skip to the next morning)) is you talking to the AI, not Wren talking to Crowe.
- Steer instead of starting again. If a reply drifts, say in one line what to change.

Is the AI roleplay generator free?
It is free to try. Hemmingway Unlocked has a free trial with no card needed, and this tool opens it with your answers filled in. You confirm you are 18 or over, sign up once, and the scene is written in the chat.
Will it sound like an AI assistant?
It is set up not to. It stays in character, writes only its own side, and does not stop a scene to lecture you. If the voice drifts, say so in double brackets.
What will it not play?
Anything sexual involving anyone under 18, a real person, animals, family or anyone who does not consent. It also never writes torture or helps with harming a real person. Every answer has a Report button.
Are my roleplay chats private?
They are kept in your browser, on your device, and not in your account or on our servers. They are never trained on. Clearing your browser's data deletes them.
