AI roleplay chat is a conversation in which the AI plays one character, or a whole cast, and you play another. You describe who it is and where you both are, it answers in character, and the story goes back and forth a turn at a time. Any capable chat model can do it. How well it goes depends on two things: how clearly you set the scene, and how much of the conversation the model can keep in view.
For ordinary roleplay, such as an adventure, a mystery or practising a hard conversation, a general assistant or regular Hemmingway will do. For adult scenes you need a tool made for adults, such as Hemmingway Unlocked, because general assistants refuse them.
How it works underneath
An AI roleplay chatbot has no script and no stage. Each time you send a message, the model is handed text: the instructions that say who it is, as much of the conversation so far as fits, and your new line. It writes what that character would plausibly say next. Then it forgets everything until the next message arrives with the text attached again.
- The character is only what is written down. If the character sheet says "gruff", you get gruff. If it says nothing about how she speaks, you get the model's default voice.
- Memory is the text in view. The model does not remember your story. It rereads it. Whatever has scrolled out of what the app sends is gone as far as the model is concerned.
- Everything in the chat steers it. Your own messages teach it the style. Write long, florid turns and it will answer in kind. Write short ones and it tightens up.
Memory and staying in character
Context is how much text the model can take in at once. A longer context keeps more of the story in view. Our own model, Hemmingway-1, has a context of 262,144 tokens, though how much of a chat any app sends to its model is up to the app.
Memory, in an app, usually means notes kept outside the chat and handed back to the model each time. Character sites often attach a description to each character this way. In regular Hemmingway, Memory is a list of things it should know, which you can read, change or delete line by line.
Characters drift for ordinary reasons. The opening description is a long way back. The model's habit of being a helpful assistant creeps in. Or the last ten messages have pulled the tone somewhere else. None of it means the chat is broken, and all of it can be fixed from your side.
When it goes wrong

Corrections work best when they are short and out of character. Many players put them in double brackets so the model knows it is you speaking and not your character:
"((Stay as Halloran. He is tired and suspicious, and he would not offer help this early. Try that reply again, under 100 words.))"
A recap can be just as short:
"((Recap: we are in the archive at night. I have the ledger. Halloran knows I lied about my name but has not said so. He wants me out before the watch changes.))"

The kinds of roleplay chat
- General assistants. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and regular Hemmingway will all play a character you describe. No character library, and rules written for a general audience.
- Character-chat sites. Character.AI and sites like it give you ready-made characters, many of them made by other users. Character.AI's own blog says its rules do not allow graphic descriptions of sexual acts. SpicyChat's guidelines say its users must be 18 or over. Janitor AI is another site of this kind. - A front end with your own model. SillyTavern describes itself as a locally installed interface for chatting with language models. It connects to a model on your own computer or to an API, which gives the most control and takes the most setting up. The best LLM for roleplay covers choosing the model.
- Adults-only apps. A normal chat app with an uncensored model, such as Hemmingway Unlocked.
Ordinary roleplay in regular Hemmingway
Regular Hemmingway is a writing app, not a character platform. It has no character library. You can still ask it to play a part in a chat, as you can with any assistant, and it is at its best when the scene turns on how people talk to each other.
That is what its model was built for. Hemmingway-1 placed third on EQ-Bench 4, a public test of emotional intelligence in conversation, which we ran ourselves. In our own tests it is weaker at hostile storytelling and at long story turns, where larger story models do better. The scores are on the model card.
It suits practising a job interview or a difficult talk, a detective story where you question the suspects, a tabletop-style adventure in short turns, or a character for language practice. An opening message for the first of those:
"You play Ms Adeyemi, a hiring manager who is friendly but does not let vague answers pass. I am interviewing for a team lead job. Ask one question at a time, press me when I waffle, and stay in character until I say stop."

Adult scenes in Hemmingway Unlocked
Regular Hemmingway does not write explicit or very dark material. Hemmingway Unlocked does. It is the adults-only side of Hemmingway, at wise.hemmingway.io, and in Hemmingway's own app a switch labelled Unlocked next to the message box takes you there.
It asks first whether you are 18 or over, then shows its rules. It writes sex between adults, explicit and in full, and dark, violent stories, and it does not lecture or refuse on grounds of taste. It is uncensored, with a few things it never writes: nothing sexual involving anyone under 18, a real person, animals, family or anyone who does not consent, and no torture or mutilation or help with real-world harm. The terms have the list.
Chats are kept in your browser, never saved to your account or our servers, and never trained on. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept. They do not sync between devices, and clearing the browser's data deletes them. It is free to try, with no card needed, and a monthly membership through Patreon after the trial.
