Talkie alternatives for adults: Hemmingway Unlocked for adult roleplay in text, and where to go for voices, character pictures and a library instead.

By the Hemmingway team ·

If you are an adult who wants the roleplay Talkie's rules leave out, written in text, with your chats kept on your own device, the alternative we make is Hemmingway Unlocked. If what you love about Talkie is the voices, the character pictures, the cards and the feed, Unlocked has none of those, and another character app will suit you better.

Hemmingway Unlocked is our uncensored AI for adults: a chat and writing app with a short list of things it never writes. We make Hemmingway Unlocked. What we say about the others comes from their own sites.

What Talkie is

Talkie's site calls it free AI character chat. Its own pages describe:

  • Characters. A library of AI characters sorted into categories such as Anime & Game, Fantasy and Sci-Fi, and a "Create a Talkie" page for making your own. Its FAQ says character settings go through moderation before they show.
  • Voices and pictures. Its terms describe a text and voice interface, and several characters on its home page mention their picture or their voice.
  • Cards and a feed. Its FAQ says chats can earn collectible cards, which can be traded for virtual currency. The site has a Community tab with a feed of posts, and a Memory tab.
  • The model. Its FAQ says the characters are AI, powered by MiniMax.
  • Who it is for. Its terms set a minimum age of 14, or higher where local law requires. They ban pornographic and excessively violent content, and its community guidelines ban explicit and suggestive sexual content and graphic gore.
  • Apps and plans. It runs in the browser and as an app, with a free tier and a paid plan called Talkie+.

So Talkie is a general-audience character app with a social side.

Why people look elsewhere

  • They are adults writing adult fiction. Talkie's rules ban sexual content, and it is open to teenagers. An adults-only service draws its line in a different place.
  • They want dark stories with the violence left in. Horror, war and crime need room that Talkie's guidelines on gore do not give.
  • They want to write, not browse. Cards, a feed and a big library are built around finding a character. Some people would rather start from a blank page and set the scene themselves.
  • They want chats kept with them. Talkie's FAQ says conversations are private and filtered against regional laws, and its terms give it a licence to store what you create in order to run the service. Its FAQ does not say where chats are kept. Some people want them on their own device only.

Character.AI has a page of its own: Character.AI alternatives.

SpicyChat

SpicyChat's docs describe a site for chatting with characters made by its users. Every user must be 18 or over, every chatbot must be portrayed as an adult, and bots with explicit content must be marked NSFW. It has group chats and a lorebook. On its higher paid tiers it can draw a picture of what is happening in the chat, and it has text-to-speech, with custom voices on its top tier.

Of everything here, this is the closest in shape to Talkie, moved to an adults-only site. SpicyChat alternatives goes further.

Kindroid

Kindroid's site calls it an AI companion app. You make one character, a Kin, and set its name, personality, backstory, look and voice. Its site describes voice messages, voice and video calls, selfies and short video selfies, memory of past conversations, and group chats. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web, and it is for adults, 18 or over.

Pick it if the voice and the face were what kept you on Talkie. Kindroid alternatives compares it with others of its kind, and we also have pages on Nomi and Candy AI.

SillyTavern with an API

SillyTavern's docs describe a locally installed interface for text models, image engines and voice models. It comes with no model. You connect it to one, on your own computer or through an API, including any OpenAI-compatible one. It has character cards, World Info for lore, group chats and personas, and extensions for images and text-to-speech. It is free and open source.

It suits you if you liked having many characters to hand and want to choose the model behind them. Unlocked's API works in it: the set-up page goes through it.

Where Hemmingway Unlocked fits

Hemmingway Unlocked is the adults-only side of Hemmingway, at wise.hemmingway.io. It asks you to confirm you are 18 or over, shows you its rules, then asks you to sign in.

  • What it writes. Sex between adults, explicit and in full. Dark, violent fiction: horror, war, crime. Roleplay where you set the scene and it plays its part, and ordinary chat. It does not stop a scene to lecture you.
  • What it never writes. Anything sexual involving anyone under 18 or an adult playing someone under 18, a real person, animals, family (step, half, adoptive and foster included) or anyone who does not want it or cannot say yes. Never torture or help hurting a real person, stalking, doxxing, harassing or scamming, weapons, explosives, making drugs, harmful software, or help with suicide or self-harm. The full list is in our terms, and every answer has a Report button.
  • Where chats live. In your browser, on your device, not on our servers, and never used for training. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept. Chats do not sync between devices, and clearing your browser's data deletes them.
  • Cost. Free to try, with no card. After the trial it is a monthly membership, from $9 a month. Its page has the rest.
  • API and weights. An OpenAI-compatible API for members, and public weights for anyone with the hardware to run them.

Where it does not fit

  • No voice or calls. It writes text. If you want to hear your character, look at Kindroid or SpicyChat.
  • No pictures or avatars. It makes no images.
  • No cards, feed or character library, and no character builder. You describe the character in your first message. The AI roleplay generator can write that opening for you.
  • No app-store app. It runs in your browser.
  • Not for anyone under 18. If you are a teenager, Talkie's own rules were written for you, and Unlocked is not.

Taking a Talkie character with you

You can carry any character as plain text. Before you go, write down:

  1. The name, and an age that makes plain they are an adult.
  2. How they talk: a few words they would use, and how long their replies run.
  3. Where you are, and how you know each other.
  4. What they want, and what they would never do.

Paste that as your first message in the new app, then say how the scene starts.

How to choose

  1. Adult roleplay and dark fiction in text, kept on your device: try Hemmingway Unlocked.
  2. An adult character library with pictures and voices: an adult character site such as SpicyChat. Read its rules first.
  3. One companion who calls and sends selfies: a companion app such as Kindroid.
  4. Character cards and your own choice of model: SillyTavern with an API.
  5. The cards, the feed and the voices, and no adult content: stay with Talkie.

Common questions

Is Talkie for adults?

Not only. Its terms let people use it from 14, or older where local law says so, and its rules ban pornographic content and graphic gore. Hemmingway Unlocked and the others named here are for adults only.

Which Talkie alternative has voices?

Kindroid's site describes voice messages and voice and video calls. SpicyChat's docs describe text-to-speech, with custom voices on its top tier. SillyTavern has text-to-speech extensions. Hemmingway Unlocked has no voice. It writes text.

Does Hemmingway Unlocked have characters to pick from?

No. There is no library and no builder. You describe the character yourself in your first message, or start from the AI roleplay generator, and it plays that character and stays in it.

Are my chats private in Hemmingway Unlocked?

They are kept in your browser, on your device, and never saved to our servers or used for training. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept. The cost is that they do not follow you to another device, and clearing your browser's data deletes them.

Is there an app for Hemmingway Unlocked?

Not in an app store. It runs in your browser at wise.hemmingway.io. If you want a front end of your own, its API works in SillyTavern.
