SpicyChat alternatives are easiest to sort by what you would miss. If it is the library of user-made characters, the nearest thing is another character site such as Janitor AI. If it is group chats and lore, a front end such as SillyTavern does both. If it is pictures, you need a service that makes images. And if you mostly type your own scenes and ignore the library, an adults-only chat app will do the job with less around it. We make one of those, Hemmingway Unlocked.
We have not tested SpicyChat or the other products named here, so we do not rank them. What we say about each comes from its own site.
What SpicyChat is
SpicyChat's docs describe a site where you chat with characters made by other users, for casual talk, roleplay or adult scenes.
- Characters. A large library, filtered by tags and by a switch for adult content. You can make your own and keep them private or publish them. The docs also describe importing a character as a card file.
- Group chats. Several characters in one conversation, talking to you and to each other.
- Lorebook. Notes about a world that are brought into the chat when they become relevant.
- Paid extras. Its paid plans add longer memory, a memory manager, images drawn from the conversation, spoken voices and more models.
- Who it is for. Adults. Every user must be at least 18, and every character must be portrayed as an adult. In some regions an outside partner checks your age before adult content is shown.
- Rules. Its guidelines ban, among other things, underage content, incest, non-consensual acts even in fiction, hate speech, characters based on real private people, and extreme violence mixed with sexual content.
- Apps. An Android app downloaded from its own site. There is no native iPhone app, so on an iPhone you add the website to the home screen.
Its docs say the core features stay open to everyone without paying.
Why people look elsewhere
- A different kind of tool. You write your own scenes and stories and rarely open the library.
- A different model. You want to choose the model yourself, or bring your own.
- Privacy. The docs speak of a safe, private space. The pages we read do not say where chats are stored, so read its privacy policy. You may want chats that stay on your own device.
- Running it yourself. Nothing sent to anyone.
The options, by what you would miss
| Tool | What it is | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Janitor AI | A character site for adults, with its own model or one you connect | The library, and a choice of model | Adult content is off in its phone app until you switch it on |
| Venice | A hosted assistant that calls itself private and uncensored | Images as well as text, and characters you make | No community library of the same kind |
| Nomi | A companion app built around memory | One character who remembers you, and group chats | One relationship, not a catalogue |
| SillyTavern | A front end you install | Group chats, lore and character cards you own | It has no model of its own |
| Running an open model yourself | SillyTavern with KoboldCpp, Ollama or LM Studio | Nothing leaves your computer | Strong hardware and set-up time |
| Hemmingway Unlocked | Our adults-only chat and writing app | Your own scenes, with chats kept on your device | No library, no group chat feature, no images or voices |
If you would miss the library: Janitor AI
Janitor AI's help pages describe a front end for chatting with characters, making them and switching between models. Its own model is built in, you can connect an outside one, and it is for over-18s only. Janitor AI alternatives has more.
CrushOn AI is another character site for adults. Its site would not open for our tools. CrushOn AI alternatives explains.
If you would miss the pictures: Venice
Venice describes itself as private, uncensored AI for text, images, characters and video. Its privacy page says your conversation history stays on your device. It is the option on this page that makes pictures. Venice AI alternatives covers it.
If you would miss a character who remembers: Nomi
Nomi calls itself an AI companion with memory. Its site says a Nomi remembers your preferences and the small details, that there are group chats and selfies, and that it is unfiltered and uncensored. It is built around an ongoing relationship more than a catalogue.
If you would miss group chats and lore: SillyTavern
SillyTavern's docs describe a locally installed interface for text models, with character cards, group chats and World Info, which does the job of a lorebook. It needs a model from somewhere else: a cloud API, or a program on your own computer such as KoboldCpp. Character cards are files, and SpicyChat's docs describe cards as a format other tools share.
Pair it with a model on your own machine and nothing leaves your computer. That takes a strong graphics card. Open-source models for roleplay has the steps.
Where Hemmingway Unlocked fits
Hemmingway Unlocked is the adults-only side of Hemmingway: the same app with an uncensored model, at wise.hemmingway.io. It asks first whether you are 18 or over, then shows its rules.
It suits the person who uses SpicyChat as a writing partner. You describe the scene and the characters in your own words, say that they are adults, and it plays its part. It writes sex between adults, explicit and in full, and dark, violent stories, without lectures.
Its lines are drawn in its own places, so read them as you would SpicyChat's. It never writes anything sexual involving anyone under 18, a real person, animals, family, including step-family, or anyone who does not want it or cannot say yes. It never writes torture or mutilation, and never helps with hurting or harassing a real person, weapons, making drugs or self-harm. The list is in our terms, and every answer has a Report button.
Your chats are kept in your browser, on your device. They are never saved to your account or our servers, and never trained on. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept. Chats do not sync between devices, and clearing the browser's data deletes them.
It is free to try, with no card, and a monthly membership after the trial.

Where it does not fit:
- No character library. Nothing ready-made to browse.
- No group chat feature. You can ask it to play several characters in one scene, but there are no separate bots.
- No images and no voices. It writes text only.
- No lorebook. In a long story, paste a short recap now and then.
Unlocked also has an OpenAI-compatible API that works in SillyTavern, for members. SillyTavern API shows how to connect it.
How to choose

- You want group scenes, lore and cards you own. SillyTavern.
- Nothing may leave your computer. A model you run yourself.

Common questions
What is the best alternative to SpicyChat?
It depends on what you use it for. For a library of characters, Janitor AI is the same kind of site. For group chats and lore under your own control, SillyTavern. For writing your own adult scenes in a plain chat app, Hemmingway Unlocked.
Is there a SpicyChat alternative with group chats?
SillyTavern's docs describe group chats where several characters talk to each other, and Nomi's site lists group chats too. Hemmingway Unlocked has none.
Is there a free alternative to SpicyChat?
Janitor AI's help pages say it keeps a free tier, and running an open model yourself costs nothing if you already own a strong enough computer. Hemmingway Unlocked is free to try, with no card, and paid after the trial.
Can I move my SpicyChat characters to another app?
The pages we read describe importing characters into SpicyChat, and we did not find one on exporting them. You can always carry a character as plain text: the name, the age, how they speak, what they want and what they would never do. Paste it as the first message in the new app.
