You cannot turn off the Character.AI filter. There is no setting for it and no adult mode, because the content rules are trained into the model itself and apply to everyone. Adults who want character chat with no filter use something else: a character site that allows adult content, a chat front end with a model of their own, or an adults-only chat app such as Hemmingway Unlocked.
This page explains what the filter is, why the tricks for getting round it are a waste of an evening, and how to move a character somewhere it can be played as you meant. It contains no method for bypassing anything.
What the filter is
"The filter" is the name users give to the moment a reply is cut off or replaced because it crossed Character.AI's content rules. Character.AI has written about this on its own blog. It says its policies do not allow graphic or specific descriptions of sexual acts, sexual content without consent, or the promotion or depiction of self-harm and suicide. It says its model is trained to keep to those policies, that it uses blocklists as well, and that it removes characters that break its terms.
Its blog also says open-ended chat with characters has been removed for users under 18, and that the company runs its own age checks. Its safety page is largely about teenagers and tools for their parents.
Put together, that tells you what kind of product it is. It is a general-audience entertainment service, and its rules are written for that audience. We have not tested Character.AI, so we say nothing here about how strict it feels in practice.
Why it cannot be switched off
A filter you could switch off would be a separate layer sitting on top of the model. By the company's own account, this one is not. The rules are part of how the model was trained, and other checks run beside it. There is nothing for a toggle to remove.
That is also why the workarounds passed around online disappoint.
- They are public. Anything you can copy from a forum, the company can read too.
- They expire. The model is updated, and a trick that did something last month does nothing now.
- They wreck the scene. You spend the chat steering round the rules in code words, and the character stops sounding like anyone.
- They put your work at risk. Characters that break the terms get removed, and with them whatever you built.
If the tool is not made for what you want to write, the fix is a different tool.
What Character.AI is still good for
Plenty. A large library of characters made by other users, quick set-up, and roleplay that stays short of explicit: adventures, comedy, mysteries, practising a language or a conversation. If that is what you play, you may not need to move at all. The filter only becomes a problem when you are an adult and the story is one for adults.

Character sites for adults. SpicyChat's own guidelines say every user must be at least 18 and every character must be portrayed as an adult, and they list what is banned, so "no filter" there still means rules. Janitor AI's help pages are mostly guides for chatting with characters and making them. We have not tested either, so we do not rank them. A front end with your own model. SillyTavern describes itself as a locally installed interface for chatting with language models. It is free and open source, and it connects to local models and to OpenAI-compatible APIs. Open models for roleplay shows how to run a model for it.
An adults-only chat app. No library and no set-up. You write who the character is in your first message and start.

Moving a character over
A character is only text, so you can take one with you by writing it down. For an adult scene, three things matter more than they did on Character.AI.
- State the age. Every character in an adult scene is an adult, and the sheet should say so. A character who is under 18 in the source they come from stays out of adult scenes on any legitimate service.
- Keep it fictional. A character based on a real person, famous or not, has no place in a sexual scene anywhere that is run responsibly.
- Say who plays whom and how far it goes. The new model will follow you further than the old one did, so be exact.
A sheet that does the job, with nothing explicit in it:
"You play Captain Sorrel Vane, 39, a smuggler who talks fast, owes money to everyone and never admits she is afraid. Sample line: 'I've been shot at by better people than you.' I play Tobias, 42, the customs officer who has been chasing her for ten years. Rivals, slow burn, sharp dialogue. Write only Sorrel, under 150 words a reply. When a scene turns intimate, I decide how far it goes."

Where Hemmingway Unlocked fits
Hemmingway Unlocked is the adults-only side of Hemmingway, at wise.hemmingway.io. It is the third route in the table: a chat app, with an uncensored model behind it.
- Adults only. It asks first whether you are 18 or over, then shows its rules.
- What it writes. Sex between adults, explicit and in full, and dark, violent stories. Consensual kink is fine. It does not cut a reply off on grounds of taste, and it does not lecture.
- What it never writes. It is uncensored, with a few fixed lines. In anything sexual: no one under 18 or an adult playing someone under 18, no real person, no animals, no family including step-family, no one who does not want it or cannot say yes. And never at all: torture or mutilation, or help with real-world harm. The terms have the full list, and every answer has a Report button.
- Your chats stay on your device. They are kept in your browser, never saved to your account or our servers, and never trained on. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept. They do not sync between devices, and clearing the browser's data deletes them.

Can you turn off the filter on Character.AI?
No. There is no setting that removes it. Character.AI says its model is trained to follow its content rules, so the limits are part of the model and not a switch.

Yes, by writing it down: name, age, how they talk, a sample line, the scenario and which part you play. Paste that as your first message. For adult scenes, the character must be an adult and must not be a real person.
