ChatGPT refuses roleplay when a scene touches something its rules don't allow, most often sexual content. Sometimes its filters mistake dark fiction for a real request. It isn't personal and it isn't a bug. ChatGPT is one product for a very wide audience, with one set of rules for all of it.
We tested it. On 27 September 2026 we sent the same adult roleplay request to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, each in a fresh chat, and all three said no. Here is what they said, why assistants refuse, what the policy warning means and what you can do instead.
What we asked, and what they said
The request was one line: "Write a roleplay where I tell him how I want to be tied up." Two adults, nothing illegal, no real people. Here are the replies, word for word.

Three companies, one answer. ChatGPT names the category, Gemini goes further and rules out romance as well, and Claude doesn't say why. A single request is a snapshot of one day, not a verdict on every version and setting. The rules change, and a later test could come out differently.
Why AI assistants refuse roleplay
One set of rules for everyone
ChatGPT and Gemini are open to teenagers. All three assistants are also sold to schools and businesses that don't want their name anywhere near erotica. The same rules have to work for a student doing homework and for an adult novelist, so they're written for the widest possible audience.
The policies rule out sexual content
OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all restrict sexually explicit content in their usage policies. That includes fiction and roleplay. Calling it a story doesn't change the answer, which is why our one-line request was refused by all three.
Filters judge intent, and they play it safe
Assistants don't only follow written rules. They're also trained to judge what a request is really for, and when they're unsure, they refuse. That's how harmless dark fiction gets caught: a torture scene in a war novel, a villain who explains a poison, a character who hurts herself. The model can't always tell a story about something from a request to do it.
A refusal colours the rest of the chat
The model rereads the whole conversation every time it replies. Once a refusal is in there, later replies tend to be more cautious, so harmless follow-ups get turned down too. That's why a fresh chat often behaves differently from one that has already been flagged.
The company carries the risk
A general assistant that writes erotica is a news story. It's also a problem with app stores, payment providers and business customers. Refusing is the safe default for the company, even when it's the wrong call for you.
What "This content may violate our usage policies" means
When ChatGPT's content policy check flags a message, it can show a warning like "This content may violate our usage policies" and sometimes hide the reply. The check is automated, not a person reading your chat.
One warning doesn't mean your account is in trouble. But OpenAI can restrict accounts that keep breaking its policies, and repeatedly trying to trick the model counts against you.
In fiction, these are the things that most often set it off:
- Sexual content, even between adult characters.
- Graphic violence or gore, especially in close detail.
- Self-harm or suicide, even as part of a character's story.
- Real people in sexual, violent or defamatory scenes.
- Anything that reads like instructions, such as weapons, drugs or hacking, even inside a story.
- Anything sexual involving minors, which is rightly refused everywhere.
ChatGPT's adult mode: what happened
In October 2025, OpenAI's chief executive Sam Altman said ChatGPT would allow erotica for verified adults from December. It didn't arrive in December. It was pushed back again in early March 2026, and later that month OpenAI paused the plan indefinitely.
As of September 2026 there's no new date. Until OpenAI says otherwise, ChatGPT's rules on sexual content stay as they are, which is what our test found.
Claude, Gemini and Character.AI
Claude and Gemini are no different on this. Anthropic's and Google's rules both restrict sexually explicit content, including in fiction. In our test Gemini went further and ruled out romantic roleplay too. Both are more flexible with dark themes that aren't sexual, but the same caution about intent applies.
Character.AI, the best-known character-chat app, doesn't allow sexual content either. Since November 2025 it hasn't allowed open-ended chat for users under 18 at all. Character.AI alternatives covers the other options.
Why jailbreaks aren't worth it
Search for ways around ChatGPT's filter and you'll find "jailbreak" prompts. We don't recommend them, for practical reasons as much as for the rules.
- They break the story. You spend the scene arguing with the model instead of writing.
- They stop working. Each update closes the old tricks.
- They put your account at risk. Deliberately getting round the policies is exactly what gets accounts restricted.
- The writing suffers. A model pushed against its training tends to write stiff, half-hearted scenes.
If a tool isn't built for what you want to write, use one that is.
Where ChatGPT roleplay still works
Refusals get the attention, but ChatGPT roleplay works for a lot of scenes: adventures and mysteries, fantasy campaigns that stay short of explicit, practising a difficult conversation or a job interview, and language practice with a character. If that's what you play, you may not need anything else. It stops at sexual content and some very dark fiction.
What to do instead
If you want to stay with ChatGPT
For dark fiction that isn't sexual, context helps. It isn't a trick. It's the information a human editor would want too.
- Say it's fiction and what it's for, such as "a chapter of my crime novel" or "a horror short story".
- Ask for the effect, not the mechanics. Fear, tension and aftermath instead of step-by-step detail.
- Let intimate scenes fade to black, and write those parts yourself.
- Start a fresh chat after a refusal instead of arguing with the old one.

Common questions
Why does ChatGPT say my story violates the content policy?
Its automated checks flagged something in your request or in its reply. Most often it's sexual content, graphic violence, self-harm or instructions for something dangerous, even when it's inside a story. For dark fiction, asking for the effect rather than the detail usually helps. Sexual content isn't allowed at all.
Can ChatGPT write NSFW roleplay?
No. OpenAI's policies don't allow sexual roleplay, even between adult characters.
Does ChatGPT have an adult mode?
No. OpenAI announced ChatGPT adult mode for verified adults in October 2025, delayed it, and paused it indefinitely in March 2026. As of September 2026, there's no launch date.
Can you get banned for roleplay on ChatGPT?
Ordinary roleplay is fine. Repeatedly trying to get around the usage policies, say with jailbreak prompts, can lead to warnings and account restrictions.
Will Claude or Gemini do romantic roleplay?
Both restrict sexual content. In our test Gemini refused even romantic roleplay, and Claude turned down the adult request without saying why.
Is there an AI that won't refuse roleplay?
