Say who the poem is for and give a few true things about them, and Hemmingway writes a short love poem from you to them. It works from the habits and moments you name, so the poem could only be about one person. You change any line you like and write it in the card yourself.
Nothing in it is made up. If you did not mention a first date, a song or the colour of their eyes, the poem will not have one. Stuck for details? Think of what you would miss: how they answer the phone, what they always order.
What makes a love poem work
- Name the thing only they do. Singing the wrong words in the car says more than "your beautiful smile", which fits anyone.
- Talk to them, not about them. "You take my jumpers" is warmer than "she takes my jumpers".
- Use the word love once, or not at all. The details do that work.
- Keep it short enough to copy out by hand. Six to twelve lines fit inside a card.

Asked for a six-line free-verse poem for a wife on a tenth anniversary, with the details that you met on a delayed train to Leeds, she sings in the car and gets the words wrong, and she steals your jumpers, a poem along these lines is what to expect:
The train to Leeds was late, and there you were.
Ten years on you sing in the car,
every word wrong, and loud,
and I hope you never learn the right ones.
You take my jumpers. Keep them.

For her, for him
Put "my wife", "my boyfriend" or "my husband of thirty years" in the first field, then give details that are true of that one person. Roses and moonlight for her, strength and steadiness for him: everyone has read those lines before. The way he makes tea before you are awake, or the way she talks to the dog, is what gets a poem kept.
