Name the two leads and say what keeps them apart. Add a setting, and a length, trope or ending. Hemmingway writes a short love story, about 900 words by default. It is non-explicit: a kiss at most. It writes short stories and single scenes, not novels.
The leads, the obstacle and the setting stay as you wrote them. Everything else, what they say and what one notices about the other, is invented to fit. The leads can be anyone you like, provided both are adults.
What makes a romance work
- The obstacle is the story. Two people who like each other and are free to say so have no story. Pride, a misunderstanding, a job in another city, a promise to someone else: pick one and make it real.
- Each lead wants something besides the other. A shop to save, a sister to impress, a train to catch. It gives the pair something to argue about.
- Let them notice small things. The way he reads the last page first. The feeling comes from what one person sees that nobody else does.
- Name the trope if you have one. Enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, second chance, fake dating. Each one sets the shape of the story, and one per short story is plenty.
An example
Asked for an enemies-to-lovers story about Priya, a wedding florist who does not believe in weddings, and Callum, a best man who keeps changing the flower order by text before they have met, in a Yorkshire Dales village the week before a June wedding, an opening along these lines is what to expect:
The third change came on a Tuesday, by text, with no greeting.
"Peonies instead of roses. Sorry. C."
Priya read it in the cold room with forty roses in her arms. She had not met Callum yet. She had already decided exactly what he looked like.
They have not met and she is already thinking about him. For more dialogue, a slower burn or a different last scene, ask the chat.
Endings
Romance readers expect the pair to end up together, or at least hopeful. Say "happy ending" or "hopeful, not settled" in the last field. If you want it sad, say so.
