AI can help with homework in the way a patient tutor does: it explains what the textbook made hard, gives you a hint when you are stuck, quizzes you, finds sources, and tells you where your working or your draft went wrong.
Hemmingway writes with Hemmingway-1.5, the undetectable AI: 90% of its writing passed GPTZero and the top AI detectors in our test. Our page on AI for school sets out what Hemmingway does for students.
Six good ways to use it
1. Explain it in plain words
Paste the paragraph you do not understand, or name the topic, and ask for it simply. Then ask again, differently, until it clicks.
Explain photosynthesis like I'm 14. Then give me one everyday example. Keep it short.
If the explanation uses a word you do not know, ask about that word. Hemmingway's text simplifier rewrites a hard passage in plain English, keeping all of it.
2. Ask for a hint, not the answer
Say so in plain words. Most assistants will give the answer if you let them.
I'm stuck on this question. Don't solve it. Give me one hint about the first step, then wait.
Some assistants have a mode built for this. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT's study mode guides you with hints, quizzes and steps, and the best AI for students lists others.
3. Quiz yourself
Give it your notes and ask it to test you. Being asked is how you find out what you do not know yet.
Here are my notes on the causes of the First World War. Ask me five questions, one at a time, and tell me after each answer what I missed.
4. Check your working
Do the problem yourself first, then paste your working and ask where the first mistake is. Ask it to point to the line, not to redo the problem.
Here is my working for question 3. Don't give me the answer. Tell me the first line where something goes wrong, and why.
5. Get feedback on a draft
Paste your paragraph or essay and ask what a reader will trip on. Then fix those spots.
Here's my paragraph. What is unclear, and where is my argument weakest? Don't rewrite it.
For spelling and grammar, the grammar checker corrects errors and leaves your wording alone.
6. Find sources
Ask it to find sources and it searches the web, reads the pages and cites them. How to paraphrase shows how to use a source without copying it.
Find three sources on why the Roman Empire split in two. Give me the link for each and one line on what it says.
Where Hemmingway fits
Hemmingway is a writing app, so it is at its best with words: explaining a topic in plain English, giving feedback on a paragraph, finding sources on the web, planning an essay from your points with the outline generator, writing a draft with the essay generator, or summarising your notes with the AI summarizer. It is English-first.

Common questions
What is the best AI for homework help?
It depends on the job. A guided mode, such as ChatGPT's study mode or Khanmigo, gives hints and asks questions instead of answers. For writing, Hemmingway explains topics in plain words, gives feedback on your drafts and finds sources on the web. The best AI for students compares them by job.
Can AI check my homework?
It can point to where your working or your writing goes wrong. Paste your work and ask it for the first mistake, or for the answer if you want to compare.
