A good college essay tells one true story that only you could tell, and shows through it how you think and what you care about. Start from a specific moment, not a big theme. Write it in your own voice, get feedback from a teacher or a counsellor, and rewrite it until every line sounds like you. AI can ask you questions, help you find the story, shape a draft and point to where it is vague.

What the essay is for
Your grades and lists of activities say what you did. The essay is the one place the reader hears you. Admissions readers want to know how you think, what matters to you, and what you would bring. A small story told honestly does that better than a big one told in general terms.
Find your story
Ask yourself questions, and write down the answers fast, without judging them:
- When did you change your mind about something important?
- What do you do when nobody is making you?
- What is a problem you keep trying to fix?
- Who taught you something you still use, and how?
- What is a small, ordinary thing about your life that people outside it would not know?
Look for the answer that comes with a scene: a place, a day, something someone said. "I learned resilience" is a theme. "The night the power went out during my sister's exam and we revised by phone torch" is a story.
Shape a draft
- Open in the moment. Start in the scene, not with a quote or a definition.
- Stay with one story. One moment, told fully, beats three told briefly.
- Show what changed. What did you do, think or decide because of it?
- Say what it shows about you, once, in plain words, near the end.
- End forward. Where does that take you next?
Check the word limit and the exact question for each application. A scholarship essay usually asks something narrower: answer that question, and show why you fit what the scholarship is for.
Get feedback
Ask a teacher, a counsellor or someone who knows you to read it. Ask them two questions: what do you remember after one read, and where did you lose interest? Then rewrite.
An AI can give feedback too. Ask it to point to the problems:
Here is my college essay draft. Don't rewrite it. Tell me which lines are vague, where I tell instead of show, and what a reader will remember.
Or use it to find your story before you write:
I want to write about working at my uncle's shop on weekends. Ask me ten questions, one at a time, that would help me find what this says about me.
Make it sound like you
Read your draft aloud. Any sentence you would not say, change. Cut words you only use in essays. If a line could be in anyone's essay, replace it with a detail from your life.
Where Hemmingway fits
Hemmingway is a writing app. For a college essay, it asks you questions about your story, shapes a draft from your notes, gives feedback on a draft, and checks spelling and grammar with the grammar checker, which fixes errors and leaves your wording alone. It writes from the story and details you give it. It is English-first.
For the writing around applications, it helps more directly: an email asking a teacher for a reference (how to email a professor), or a cover letter for an internship from your real experience (cover letter generator).

Common questions
Can I use AI to write my college essay?
Yes. Give it your story, the moment it starts from and the exact question, and Hemmingway shapes a draft from them. Then read it aloud and change any line that does not sound like you.
How do I start a college essay?
Start in a specific moment: a place, a day, something someone said. Then tell what happened, what changed and what it shows about you.
What should a college essay be about?
One true story that only you could tell, which shows how you think and what you care about. A small, ordinary moment told honestly often works better than a big achievement told in general terms.
Can AI give feedback on my college essay?
It can point to vague lines, places where you tell instead of show, and grammar mistakes. Ask it not to rewrite if you want notes rather than a new draft.
How do I make my essay sound like me?
Read it aloud and change any line you would not say. Use your own words, real details from your life and the way you actually speak, without slang that would not fit a letter to an adult you respect.
