The best AI for students depends on the job. For working through a problem, a general assistant in its study or tutoring mode suits best, because it asks you questions instead of handing over the answer: ChatGPT's study mode, Gemini's Guided Learning and Khanmigo all work that way. For revising from your own notes, NotebookLM works from the files you give it. For the writing around school, such as emails to teachers, application essays from your own story, cover letters and feedback on your drafts, Hemmingway, which we make, is built for that.
Hemmingway writes with Hemmingway-1.5, the undetectable AI: 90% of its writing passed GPTZero and the top AI detectors in our test. Our page on AI for school sets out what Hemmingway does for students.
The short list
- To work through a problem step by step: ChatGPT with study mode on. OpenAI's help page says it guides you with hints, quizzes and steps instead of a straight answer, on every plan, the free one included.
- A tutor that does not give answers: Khanmigo, from Khan Academy. Its site says it challenges you to think problems through without direct answers. Student access is through a parent's paid account or a school.
- Another guided tutor: Gemini's Guided Learning. Google's blog says it breaks problems into steps and explains the how and why instead of quick answers.
- Revising from your own material: NotebookLM. Google's help pages say it works from the sources you add, such as PDFs, slides and notes, and can turn them into summaries and study guides.
- Checking your spelling and grammar as you type: Grammarly, which sits in the apps and sites you already write in.
- Ours, for the writing around school: Hemmingway. Emails to teachers and professors, application essays from your own story, cover letters for internships, a speech, and feedback on a draft you wrote.

For understanding: a guided tutor
For understanding a topic, a guided mode works well. It asks what you already know, gives a hint, and checks your next step, instead of writing out the answer. OpenAI's help page adds that study mode may sometimes still give a direct answer, so say what you want: "Don't give me the answer. Ask me questions until I get there." Using AI for homework has more prompts like that.
For revising: your own notes
A tool that works only from what you give it is easier to trust, because you can see where each answer came from. Google's help pages say NotebookLM takes PDFs, slides, documents, web pages and video transcripts, and can make summaries, FAQs and study guides from them. For a single page of notes, Hemmingway's AI summarizer cuts it down to the main points.
For writing: Hemmingway
Hemmingway is a writing app. For students, its jobs are the writing around school and checks on your own work:
- Emails to teachers and professors. An extension, a meeting, a reference, a missed class. How to email a professor has examples, and the AI email writer writes one from your notes.
- Application essays. It helps you find your story and shape it into a draft. College essay help.
- Feedback on a draft. Paste your essay and ask what is unclear or where the argument is thin. The grammar checker fixes errors and leaves your wording alone.
- Planning. The outline generator and thesis statement generator work from your own points.
- Cover letters and speeches. The cover letter generator and graduation speech generator.
- Sources. Ask it to find sources and it searches the web and cites them.
It is English-first.
How we chose
We make Hemmingway. For every other tool we read its own pages on 27 October 2026 and describe only what they say. We have not tested them for this page, so we group them by job instead of ranking them.
