The best uncensored AI depends on the job. Venice suits a private all-round assistant that also makes pictures, an open model run with LM Studio, Ollama or KoboldCpp suits anyone who wants nothing to leave their computer, and character sites such as Janitor AI and SpicyChat suit people who want ready-made characters. For adult fiction and roleplay in text, there is our own Hemmingway Unlocked.
Everything here is for adults. Uncensored means a tool that does not refuse or lecture over sexual, violent or dark material. It never means a hosted service with nothing it will not write. We make Hemmingway Unlocked, so it is marked as ours below. We have not tested the others, so this list is sorted by job, not ranked.
The short list
- For a private all-round assistant: Venice. Its site offers uncensored chat, images and video under one account, and says your conversation history stays on your device.
- For nothing leaving your computer: an open model run with LM Studio, Ollama or KoboldCpp. Your words are never sent anywhere, and no company's rules apply.
- For a library of characters: Janitor AI. A character site for over-18s, with its own model built in and the option to connect another.
- For characters with group chats, pictures and voices: SpicyChat. Its docs list all three, and its guidelines say plainly what is banned.
- For one companion who remembers you: Nomi. It calls itself an AI companion with memory, and says it is unfiltered and uncensored.
- For co-writing a long story in private: NovelAI. A story generator that writes with you, whose site says your prompts are encrypted.
- Ours, for adult fiction and roleplay in text: Hemmingway Unlocked. An adults-only chat and writing app with an uncensored model, chats kept on your device, and an API for members.

Venice
Venice describes itself as private AI for creative freedom, with uncensored chat, images and video, plus characters, audio, code and search. Its privacy page says your conversation history stays on your device and your requests pass through its proxy without being stored. It also says that what an outside model provider sees depends on the privacy mode you choose. It has an OpenAI-compatible API, so it covers developers as well.
An open model on your own computer
LM Studio's docs describe downloading models from Hugging Face and running them entirely offline on Mac, Windows or Linux, with a local server in OpenAI's format. Ollama runs open models on the same three systems with an API of its own, and also offers cloud models, which are not local. KoboldCpp is a single program that runs GGUF model files, with its own window for chat, adventure and story writing. A model that writes well needs a strong graphics card, and Uncensored LLM explains how the models themselves are made uncensored.
Janitor AI
Janitor AI's main site turned our tools away, so this comes from its help centre. It is a site for chatting with characters its users make, and its guidelines say it is for over-18s only. Its own model, JLLM, is built in, and the help pages cover connecting an outside one. Choose it if browsing other people's characters is the fun.
SpicyChat
SpicyChat's docs say every user must be at least 18 and every character must be portrayed as an adult. They list group chats, a lorebook, a memory manager, pictures drawn from the conversation and character voices. Its guidelines ban, among other things, non-consensual scenes, family roleplay and the likeness of real people.
Nomi
Nomi calls itself an AI companion with memory, built for friendship, romance and roleplay, and says it is unfiltered and uncensored. Its site lists group chats, selfies and voice chat, and its terms say you must be 18 or over. It suits someone who wants one character to come back to, more than a crowd of them.
NovelAI
NovelAI offers a story generator that writes with you and an anime image generator. Its home page stresses privacy and promises creative freedom, but it does not set out what the story writer will and will not write. It suits writers who want to steer a long story more than chat with a character.
What about Grok and ChatGPT?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are not uncensored. On 27 September 2026 we sent each the same adult roleplay request, and all three refused: why ChatGPT refuses roleplay has the replies. Grok, from xAI, is a general assistant with chat, image making and a developer API, by its own pages. Those pages do not say what it allows in adult fiction, and we have not tested it, so it is not on the list.
How we chose
Every claim about another product comes from that product's own website, help pages or docs, read on the day we wrote this page, and stays general. We give no prices, because they change; check each site. We have not tested Venice, Janitor AI, SpicyChat, Nomi, NovelAI, Grok or the local runners, so we cannot say how well any of them writes. Our only test in this area is the refusal test above. CrushOn AI's site would not open for us, so it is left out.
Where Hemmingway Unlocked fits
Hemmingway Unlocked is the adults-only side of Hemmingway, at wise.hemmingway.io: the same app with an uncensored model. In Hemmingway's own app, the switch labelled Unlocked next to the message box takes you there. It asks first whether you are 18 or over, then shows its rules.
It writes sex between adults, explicit and in full, and dark, violent stories, without refusing or lecturing on grounds of taste. It is uncensored, with a short list of things it never writes: nothing sexual involving minors, real people, animals, family or anyone who does not consent, and no help with real-world harm such as weapons, making drugs or self-harm, all set out on its page.
Chats are kept in your browser, never saved to your account or our servers, and never trained on. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept, so chats do not sync between devices. It is free to try with no card, then a monthly membership (Plus, Pro or Max) through Patreon, or you can pay with USDC on Base. Where something else suits better:
- Nothing may leave your computer. Run an open model. Unlocked's weights are not out yet; we plan to open-source it soon.

What is the best uncensored AI?
It depends on the job. Venice is a hosted assistant that calls itself private and uncensored, with images as well as chat. Is Grok uncensored?
Grok's own pages that we could read do not set out what it will write in adult fiction, and we have not tested it. For comparison, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each refused the same adult roleplay request in our test on 27 September 2026.
Is there an uncensored AI with an API?
Yes. Venice's site describes an OpenAI-compatible API, and LM Studio, Ollama and KoboldCpp can serve a local model over an API on your own machine. Hemmingway Unlocked has an OpenAI-compatible endpoint at https://wise.hemmingway.io/v1, with a key that needs a membership.
Can I run an uncensored AI on my own computer?
Yes, with LM Studio, Ollama or KoboldCpp and an open model downloaded from Hugging Face. You need a strong graphics card for a model that writes well, and smaller models that fit an ordinary laptop write weaker scenes.
