Uncensored AI is an AI model or app that does not refuse, lecture or water down what an adult asks for because the subject is sexual, violent or dark. Adults use it for fiction, roleplay and frank conversation. It does not mean an AI that will do anything. Every real service keeps a few hard lines, and the honest ones print them where you can read them.
There are three ways to get one: run an open model on your own computer, use a hosted uncensored assistant, or use a character-chat site that allows adult content. We make Hemmingway Unlocked, which is the second kind, so this page also says where it fits and where another route suits you better.
What the word is applied to
"Uncensored" gets attached to three different things, and it helps to know which one you are looking at.
- An uncensored model. A language model that has been trained, or retrained by someone else, so that it does not turn requests down by reflex. Open models of this kind are shared online for anyone to download. Uncensored LLMs explains how they are made.
- An uncensored service. A company runs a model like that for you, in a chat app or through an API, and sets its own rules in its terms.
- An uncensored mode. A separate, adults-only side of an ordinary AI app, which you enter after confirming your age.
With the first, the only rules are the ones the model learned and the ones the law sets for you. With the other two, a company decides where the lines are, so its rules page matters more than its home page.
Why ordinary assistants are not like this
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each serve an enormous audience that includes schools, offices and teenagers, and their rules are written for all of those people at once. On 27 September 2026 we sent the same adult roleplay request to all three, and each refused. Why ChatGPT refuses roleplay has the request, the replies and the reasons. That is a sensible choice for a general product. It is also why a separate kind of tool exists for adults.
What uncensored AI is used for
- Dark fiction. Horror, war, crime and grim fantasy, with the fear and the violence left in.
- Adult fiction and roleplay. Romance and sex between adult characters, written as the scene needs.
- Frank conversation. Talking about adult subjects without a paragraph of warnings in front of every answer.
Two things it is not.
- It is not cleverer. Taking the refusals away does not make a model more accurate or a better writer. It can still be wrong and sound certain, so it is no more suitable for medical, legal or money decisions than any other AI.
- It is not a way to hurt people. A service that will help you stalk someone or build a weapon is not uncensored. It is careless, and it will be careless with your data too.
Where the limits still sit
Any legitimate service rules out sexual content involving anyone under 18. Beyond that, services differ on real people, on how far violence can go, and on anything that reads like working instructions. Three signs that a service has thought about it:
- It asks whether you are an adult before anything else.
- It lists what it will not write, in plain words, before you pay.
- It gives you a way to report an answer that breaks its own rules.
If a site promises no limits of any kind, treat that as advertising. It either has limits it has not told you about, or it has none and nobody is looking after the place.
Three ways to get uncensored AI

Running a model yourself. Ollama and LM Studio both describe themselves as ways to run open models on your own computer, and KoboldCpp as text-generation software for local model files. SillyTavern, a free and open-source front end, gives you the chat window. It is the most private route and the most work. Open models for roleplay walks through it.
A hosted assistant. Venice describes itself as private, uncensored AI for text, images and more. Hemmingway Unlocked is ours, and it writes text only. We have not tested Venice, so we do not rank it here.
A character site. SpicyChat's own guidelines say every user must be 18 or over and every character must be an adult. Janitor AI's help pages are mostly guides for chatting with characters and for making them. We have not tested either.
What to check before you pick
Once a service has passed the three signs above, four more things decide whether it suits you.
- Where your chats are kept. On the company's servers, in your browser, or on your own computer, and whether they are used for training. Uncensored AI chat goes through what each means.
- Text, pictures or both. Some services make images. Some only write.
- How you pay and how you stop.
- The writing. Try a scene you care about before paying for anything.
Where Hemmingway Unlocked fits
Hemmingway Unlocked is the adults-only side of Hemmingway, at wise.hemmingway.io. It is the same app with an uncensored model behind it. In Hemmingway's own app, a switch labelled Unlocked next to the message box takes you there.
It asks first whether you are 18 or over, then shows its rules. It writes sex between adults, explicit and in full, and dark, violent stories, and it does not lecture or refuse on grounds of taste. It is uncensored, and there are a few things it never writes. In anything sexual: no one under 18, no real person, no animals, no family, and no one who does not want it or cannot say yes. Your chats are kept in your browser, on your device. They are never saved to your account or our servers, and never trained on. Each message passes through our servers to be answered and is not kept. The cost is that chats do not sync between devices, and clearing your browser's data deletes them.

Is uncensored AI safe to use?
It depends on who runs it. Look for an age check, written rules, a clear answer on where chats are kept, and a way to report bad answers. Treat anything it tells you as writing, not as medical, legal or money advice.
